Marauders power trio of home runs in pair of losses to Lions

JOPLIN, MO – The University of Mary bashed a trio of home runs in the opening game of Sunday's doubleheader at Missouri Southern State University. The power display wasn't enough to carry the Marauders to victory as the Lions claimed 9-5 and 11-2 victories to complete a weekend sweep of UMary.

GAME 1 Missouri Southern 9 UMary 5
Calvin James, Alec Battest and Spencer Gillund provided a power surge for the Marauders in an early morning game against the Lions. UMary managed just two other hits in the game and the Marauders were unable to match the scoring pace set by the Lions.

PIVOT POINT
The Marauders scored single runs in each of the third and fourth innings on home runs by James and Battest to pull UMary with 5-3. The Lions responded with a three-run home run in the bottom of the fourth by Tommy Stevenson to create an unsurmountable cushion.

GAME 2 Missouri Southern 11 UMary 2
Tied 2-2 through four innings, the Lions exploded for back-to-back big innings that the Marauders couldn't overcome. Missouri Southern plated four runs in the fifth inning and five in the sixth to score the final nine runs of the game.

PIVOT POINT
After holding the Lions to just two runs on two hits through the first four innings, Daniel Turner walked two of the first three hitters in the fifth inning. After a pitching change and a single loaded the bases, Jordan Fitzpatrick broke the tie with a two-run single through the right side. Two more runs soon followed on a wild pitch and a fielder's choice groundout.
