Turner twirls Marauders to day one split with Mules

WARRENSBURG, MO – University of Mary sophomore Daniel Turner tossed a 5-hit complete game to lead the University of Mary to a doubleheader split at the University of Central Missouri. James Martin drove in three runs and Paxton Thompson crossed the plate three times for the Marauders in a 6-1 win. The day opened with a 5-4 walkoff win for the Mules.

A tight-knit game between the Marauders and the Mules, homestanding Central Missouri slipped past the Marauders 5-4 on a run in the bottom the eighth inning. Jaxon Kostka had the big blow for the Marauders, cracking a 3-run home run in the sixth inning to cap a 4-run inning.
 
PIVOT POINT
Tied at 4-4 and entering extra innings, Cole Taylor hits a one-out triple. After UMary pitcher Liam Sommers induces a pop up for the second out, Brennan van Breusegen singles to left field on a 1-0 pitch to score Taylor with the walk-off run.
 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Jaxon Kostka was 1-for-3 with three RBIs and a run scored on his first home run of the season
  • Alec Battest and James Martin both had doubles and scored a run
  • Spence Gillund walked three times and scored a run
  • Liam Sommers allowed just one run in 2.2 innings, allowing three hits

Earning his team-high second win of the season, Daniel Turner pitched the Marauders first complete game of the year. Needing just 82 pitches to throw seven innings, Turner kept the Mules in check. UCM managed just five hits against Turner, who allowed just five hits, no walks and struck out three.
 
PIVOT POINT
After posting single runs in each of the fourth, fifth and sixth innings, the Marauders pulled away with three runs in the seventh. Taking advantage of two walks and an error, UMary scored a run on a bases loaded catcher's interference call with Alec Battest at the plate. James Martin followed with a two-run single.
 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Daniel Turner pitched seven innings, allowing five hits and no walks while allowing one run
  • Martin was 2-for-2 with two walks and three RBIs
  • Paxton Thompson had a home run, scored three times and walked once
