Marauders fall in shootout to Warriors on milestone night for White

BISMARCK, ND – Honored before the game as the University of Mary men's basketball 2020 Kevin Olson Scholarship award recipient, senior Jaylan White added another milestone in his memorable career when he cracked 1,000 career points late in the Marauders 86-83 loss to visiting Winona State University.

White is the 19th UMary player to reach 1,000 points in a career. Needing eight to reach the landmark, the native of St. Charles, IA, posted 13 in the game. He now has scored 1,005 points and ranks 18th all-time. He is also sixth on the Marauders career leaderboard in assists with 321. White finished the game with three assists and two steals.

The Olson Scholarship is awarded annually to a senior member of the men's basketball team in honor of Marauders Hall of Fame member Kevin Olson, who played at UMary from 1979-83, scoring nearly 1,500 points and leading the squad to 94 wins in his four seasons. The Olson Scholarship is awarded to a men's basketball player who exemplifies the things Olson's friends remember most about Kevin – integrity, leadership and teamwork. The award was established after Olson's death in 2006 at the age of 45 after battling cancer. White is the 14th recipient of the award.

Tying his career high with 27 points, Matthew Kreklow also reached a career milestone. The junior center now has 904 points in his career. The Marauders career leader in blocked shots is the 27th UMary player to reach 900 career points.

Kreklow dominated the paint. He made 7-of-10 field goals and made all 13 free throws. In addition to eight rebounds, he also had three assists as the Marauders outscored the Warriors 30-20 in the paint. Kreklow was also fouled nine times in the game while committing just three of his own.

The Marauders also had a big boost of the bench from Trever Kaiser and Josh Sipes, who combined for 29 points as the Marauders reserves outscored the Warriors backups 30-12. Continuing his torrid scoring pace, Kaiser scored 16 points and hauled down eight rebounds. He hit three 3s in the game and has either led the Marauders in scoring or been second in each of the last four games. Sipes also hit three treys on his way to 13 points.

Caleb Wagner led the Warriors with 27 points, nine rebounds and seven assists. Kevion Taylor had 21 points and Andrea Lo Biondo posted 16.

With temperatures warming up outside, both offenses kept the heat rising inside the McDowell Activity Center. The Marauders made 49 percent of their shots from the floor, including an 11-of-28 effort from behind the arc while connecting on 20-of-25 free throws. The Warriors were just as stellar, hitting 48 percent from the floor, making 13-of-31 three-pointers and converting 19-of-23 free throws.

The game appeared over early as the Warriors built a 32-15 edge. Instead, the Marauders flipped the switch and made a 17-3 run behind back-to-back 3s from Wyatt Carr and a Kaiser trey to end the run. A Sipes three-ball in the final minute before intermission gave the Marauders a 41-39 lead.

A tight contest throughout the second half, the Warriors built a 75-67 lead with five minutes remaining on a 14-6 run.

A White basket with just under a minute left in the game pulled the Marauders within 80-78. A free throw by the Warriors and a trey by Taylor with 20 seconds left eventually put the game out of the Marauders reach.

The Marauders conclude a four-game home stand next weekend when UMary hosts Bemidji State University and the University of Minnesota Crookston on Feb. 14-15. It is the final home weekend of the season for the Marauders.
