BISMARCK, ND – Clicking on both ends of the court, the University of Mary men's basketball team knocked off Upper Iowa University 85-71.
Jaylan White paved the path to victory with 21 points, five assists and five steals against the Peacocks, who entered the night in third place in the Northern Sun.
White gave the Marauders the early spark they needed, scoring 10 of UMary's first 15 points in the game and 17 in the first half. The senior guard, now eight points away from scoring 1,000 in his career, hit 8-of-13 shots for the game – including 3-of-5 behind the arc – and connected on both free throws. His five assists and five steals led the Marauders.
UMary (11-12, 6-11 NSIC) had a strong night shooting the ball, connecting on 10-of-18 shots behind the arc while posting a 52.7 percent field goal percentage for the game overall. Eight Marauders hit treys in the game, including four who made their only attempt in the game from behind the arc. The Marauders were also strong at the line, making 17-of-20. Upper Iowa shot a solid 46.9 percent for the game but the Peacocks (14-9, 11-6) were held to 11 points below their average by the Marauders, who entered the game second in the NSIC in points allowed per game. One of the top three-point shooting teams in the country, the Peacocks struggled to get good looks behind the arc, converting just 5-of-13 3s on the night. UI also went to the line just eight times, making three.
The Marauders took control of the game behind a 19-4 run to close out the first half. Five Marauders scored during the run with
Kade Amundson,
Justin Engg and White hitting 3s during the outburst as UMary entered intermission leading 45-33.
Continuing to push the pedal to the metal, UMary led by as many as 23 points in the second half before Upper Iowa made a late run to finish within 14.
Trever Kaiser had another big game for the Marauders. After leading UMary in scoring both games last week, the sophomore provided another instant spark off the bench, scoring 13 points. He hit 5-of-7 shots and snared six rebounds. His efforts helped the Marauders reserves out-score the Peacocks bench 27-18.
Matthew Kreklow controled the paint, scoring 17 points, grabbing six rebounds and blocking two shots. UMary finished the game +8 on the boards.
Glenn Jordan added 10 points, making all five of his free throws.
Josh Carter paced the Peacocks with 17 points.
The Marauders wrap up the weekend with Alumni Day when Winona State visits on Saturday, Feb. 8. Game time is 5:30 pm at the McDowell Activity Center.
