ALBERT LEA, MN - The University of Mary scored the final seven goals of the game to overcome an early deficit in an 8-2 rout of Waldorf University. Cyril Nagurski and Alex Flicek scored two goals apiece to pace visiting UMary in the first matchup between the ACHA Division II Marauders and the ACHA Division I Warriors.
Drew Lenertz provided the Marauders an early lead when he scored a power play goal just 2:20 into the game and only 10 seconds into the man advantage.
Following a pair of unassisted goals by the Warriors Michael Heitkamp to give Waldorf a 2-1 lead, the Marauders responded with a flurry.
Andrew Huber knotted the score at the 15:45 mark, the start of a seven-goal run for UMary. A minute later, Nagurski broke the tie and sent the Marauders into the first intermission with a 3-2 lead. It was the first goal of the season for Nagurski.
Second period goals by Tanner Eskro and Flicek pushed the Marauders advantage to 5-2. The Flicek goal came while UMary was shorthanded. A first-year player at UMary, Eskro's goal was his first with the Marauders.
A flurry of three goals in less than three minutes into the start of the third period sealed the Marauders victory. A Seth Cushing goal just 1:32 into the final stanza was quickly followed by goals from Nagurski and Flicek, who scored only 21 seconds apart.
Nagurski and Flicek finished with three-point nights as each added an assist to their pair of goals. Cushing (goal and an assist) and Mathew Janke (two assists) both registered a pair of points.
Kyle Hayden stopped 20 shots on the night and UMary has won all three of his starts this season. The Marauders held a 55-22 edge in shots.
UMary improves to 5-0-0-1 on the season after winning all three games on their weekend road trip, including a two-game sweep at Iowa State. The Marauders next play a trio of games at Liberty University beginning Oct. 22.
