Marauders Upset Bid Against #6 UCSD Comes Up Just Short, Falling To UCSD, SMU In Season Opener

LAS VEGAS, NV – Nine different Marauders accounted for UMary's 15 hits during the first two games of the season. The Marauders hung tough against #6 UC San Diego, leading late in the game before the Tritons came back to claim a 5-3 victory. The Marauders followed that up with a loss to Saint Martin's by a score of 6-2. A four run second inning by the Saints proved to be the difference in the game. Haley Berube and Mikaela Pelesauma each recorded three hits with Emma Noble and Rachael Laetsch adding extra base hits. Rebekkah Keller started her season off with three steals in the first two games.
 
GAME 1 University of Mary 3 UC San Diego 5
The Marauders were poised for the big upset over #6 University of California - San Diego, holding a 3-2 lead after the top of the fifth. A Rachael Laetsch double in the fourth inning knocked in two runs for the Marauders, evening things up at two. Haley Berube knocked in UMary's third run of the game, giving them their first lead over the nationally ranked Tritons. UCSD responded by putting up three runs in the bottom of the fifth to take a 5-3 lead which would become final with neither team scoring in the last two innings.
 
PIVOT POINT
With the Marauders holding a 3-2 lead, the #6 Tritons came out in the bottom of the fifth and scored three runs to claim the lead. UMary was held scoreless for the remainder of the game.

STAT OF THE GAME
The Marauders proved they have what it takes to hang with some of the best in the nation. UMary outhit the Tritons 7-5 with six different Marauders accounting for hits.
 

GAME 2 UMary 2 Saint Martin's 6
UMary featured a balanced offensive attack with seven Marauders accounting for the teams eight hits. The Marauders were able to get on the board first when Haley Berube knocked in Rebekkah Keller to put UMary up 1-0 in the first. Saint Martin's responded by scoring four runs in the second inning to take the lead, extending it to 6-1 in the sixth. UMary was able to double their run total in the seventh inning when Emma Noble scored on a fielding error. A pair of hits and an RBI by Haley Berube led the way for UMary.
  
PIVOT POINT
Saint Martin's was able to blast a three-run homer in the second inning to take a 3-1 lead. With momentum on their side they extended the lead, putting the game just out of the reach of the Marauders.
