Unable to duplicate another buzzer-beater, Marauders fall in overtime to Wildcats

WAYNE, NE – Hoping to duplicate a second straight last-second victory, the University of Mary men's basketball team couldn't convert a chance to win in the closing seconds of regulation before dropping an 85-77 overtime decision at Wayne State College. Trever Kaiser led the Marauders with 18 points and Wyatt Carr added 17.

Fighting back from a 16-point second half deficit, Carr pulled the Marauders even at 71-71 on a jumper with 36 seconds left in the game. A defensive stop by UMary and a Josh Sipes rebound with five seconds left gave the Marauders a chance to win in regulation but a tough runner by Jaylan White at the buzzer wouldn't fall.

In overtime, White gave the Marauders a quick 74-71 lead with a 3-ball on UMary's first possession. The Wildcats pulled even on a Nate Mohr trey before UMary went ahead 75-74 on a Carr free throw. It was the final lead of the game for the Marauders as Wayne State outscored UMary 11-2 over the remainder of the overtime.

UMary had won its last outing 78-77 at Bemidji State University on a slam dunk by Matthew Kreklow with 1.5 seconds remaining in the game.

Kaiser scored 12 of his 18 points in the second half. All 12 came during a 35-21 run that pulled the Marauders within two points with 1:31 to play. In a reserve role, the sophomore hit all seven of his free throws in the game and added two steals. UMary's bench held a 33-10 scoring advantage over the Wildcats reserves.

Carr posted 11 of his 17 points after intermission. He hit 6-of-8 shots overall, including 2-of-3 behind the arc. Carr also chipped in seven rebounds and two assists.

White scored nine points. Sipes hit two treys and added eight points off the bench. Kreklow had nine rebounds, six points and two blocks.

Nick Ferrarini led all players with five treys and 27 points for the Wildcats. Jordan Janssen added 17 points and 12 rebounds. Mohr added 15 points.

The Marauders shot just 39.1 percent from the floor, including a 6-for-30 effort behind the arc. UMary did make 17-of-23 free throws. The Wildcats hit 49.2 percent of their shots, making 8-of-18 trey attempts and hitting 13-of-20 free throws.

UMary closes out the weekend and a four-game road trip at Augustana University on Saturday, Feb. 1. Game time is 5:30 pm at the Sanford Pentagon in Sioux Falls, SD.
