James posts four hits for Marauders on opening day at 4 Him Classic

CLERMONT, TX – University of Mary freshman Calvin James rocked four hits in his collegiate debut as the Marauders lost a pair of games at the 4 Him Classic on the opening day of the 2020 season. Colorado Christian University defeated the Marauders 11-4 in the opener before Rogers State University shut out UMary 5-0 in game two.
 
The Marauders have a pair of games remaining on opening weekend. UMary next faces Southern Nazarene University on Saturday, Feb. 1. First pitch is 12:30 pm at The Depot in Cleburne, TX. The weekend closes with a 10 am game on Sunday, Feb. 2.
 
GAME 1 Colorado Christian University 11 University of Mary 4
University of Mary newcomers Calvin James and Spencer Gillund both posted a pair of hits to headline the Marauders efforts in a season-opening loss to Colorado Christian University. The Marauders fell into a 7-0 deficit and couldn't recover, despite a 4-run explosion for UMary in the seventh inning.
 
PIVOT POINT
After a pair of scoreless innings, the Cougars took advantage of three Marauders miscues in the third inning to score three runs, two of which were unearned. Colorado Christian struck for four more runs in both the sixth and eighth innings to outpace UMary.
 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Spencer Gillund finished with two hits in five at bats, driving in two runs on a triple
  • Freshman shortstop Calvin James was 2-for-4 with a walk, a steal and a run scored in his college debut
  • Alec Battest and James Martin both ripped doubles. Martin also walked and scored a run

After posting a pair of hits in the opener, freshman infielder Calvin James added two more in the second contest against Rogers State University, fresh off an NCAA regional appearance last spring. Paxton Thompson also added two hits in his hitting debut. Both teams produced seven hits but a pair of errors by the Marauders led to four unearned runs in a win for the Hillcats.
 
PIVOT POINT
The Hillcats struck first, scoring two unearned runs on wild pitches in the top of the first inning. Rogers State grew its lead to 3-0 when the Hillcats scored another unearned run in the second, this time on a bases-loaded walk. The three early runs were more than enough for Rogers State pitcher Jackson Simonsgaard, who struck out ten while allowing five hits, one walk and no runs in six innings.
 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Calvin James was 2-for-4
  • After pitching game one, Paxton Thompson posted two hits – including a double - while playing first base
