Record day by Battest, James leads Marauders to 12-5 win over Storm

CLEBURNE, TX – Record performances by Alec Battest and Calvin James highlighted the first win of the season for the University of Mary baseball team. The Marauders scored multiple runs in four different innings to earn a 12-5 victory over Southern Nazarene University 12-5 on the second day of the 2020 season and the 4 Him Classic. The Marauders are 1-2 on the season.

Battest had a huge day for the Marauders. In his first season at UMary, the junior catcher cracked four doubles, scored three times, drove in a run and posted five hits in six at bats.

The four doubles sets an NCAA era record for the Marauders. Battest also tied the school's NCAA era record for hits with five. The former record for doubles was three, last accomplished by Derek Sommerville in 2014. Battest is also the fifth UMary player to record five hits in a game since beginning NCAA play in 2006. Jason Shaul in 2016 was the last Marauders player to post five hits.

A freshman, James continued his hot play from opening day when he had a team-best four hits in two games. In his third collegiate game, James blasted two home runs, drove home four runs, scored twice and finished with three hits in five at bats. He also had a walk.

The two home runs by James ties the Marauders NCAA era single game. This was the tenth time a UMary player has hit a pair of home runs in a single game. Darius Barlas hit two in a game last season. Tyler Liffrig accomplished the feat three times in his Marauders career.

Jaxon Ford also played a major role, posting three hits, driving in three runs and scoring once.

PIVOT POINT
Holding a 3-2 lead after three innings, the Marauders scored the next six runs to pull away from the Storm, crossing the plate four times in the fourth inning and two more times in the fifth to build an insurmountable 9-2 advantage. James led off the fourth with a solo home run to right. After a pair of walks and a hit batter to load the bases, Battest doubled to right to score a run. James Martin finished the rally with a two-run single to right to give the Marauders a 7-2 lead.

For the second straight inning, James led off the fifth with a home run, this time down the right field line. One out later Paxton Thompson followed suit with a solo shot, also leaving the park down the right field line.
