Second half surge carries #23 Bulldogs past Marauders

BISMARCK, ND – Facing off against one of the nation's top teams, the University of Mary men's basketball team hung with 23rd ranked University of Minnesota Duluth early into the second half before the visiting Bulldogs pulled away to claim a 78-54 win over the Marauders.
 
Matthew Kreklow led the Marauders in scoring with 10 points, The junior center also added seven rebounds, blocked a pair of shots and made two steals. Krekow is now five blocks from tying the school record of 108.
 
Josh Sipes knocked down a career-high three treys and scored nine points. He missed only one of his four attempts from behind the arc. Jaylan White added seven points, five assists and five rebounds. Kade Amundson drained both his shots from behind the arc for six points. Glenn Jordan also knocked down a pair of treys and scored six points.
 
Logan Rohrscheib nailed five treys for UMD and led the Bulldogs with 19 points, Brandon Myer had 14 points, nine rebounds, five assists, two blocks and two steals. Alex Illikainen chipped in 13 points and Drew Blair 11.
 
The Bulldogs (12-3 overall, 7-2 NSIC) led by as many as 15 points early in the first half before the Marauders (7-8, 2-7). UMary closed the first half on an 16-6 run to close within 30-25 at intermission behind treys from Trever Kaiser, Sipes, Regan Tollefson, and White. UMD broke the game open with a 23-6 run early in the second half.
 
The Marauders connected on 35.7 percent of their 3-point attempts for the game (10-of-28) but shot just 35 percent from the floor overall. The Bulldogs finished the game shooting 50 percent overall, including 62.1 percent in the second half.
 
The two teams combined to shoot just nine free throws with UMary going 2-for-3 at the line.
 
The Marauders close out the weekend with a visit from St. Cloud State University on Saturday, Jan. 11. Game time for the Northern Sun matchup is 5:30 pm at the McDowell Activity Center.
