Red-hot Marauders outscore Huskies 85-80

Kreklow sets UMary career record for blocked shots in victory

BISMARCK, ND – The best University of Mary offensive performance of the season carried the Marauders to an 85-80 win over visiting St. Cloud State University, earning UMary a season split with the Huskies. Matthew Kreklow, one of three Marauders to score 18 points in the game, broke the school career record for blocks on a night the Marauders registered season-highs for shooting percentage overall and from behind the arc.

Kreklow posted four blocks on the night, pushing his career total to 109. The previous school record was 108 by All-American and Marauders Hall of Famer Marc Hawley in 1995-97.

Joining Kreklow as 18 point scorers were Josh Sipes and Wyatt Carr. The trio combined to make 21-of-26 shots, including a 7-of-10 effort on treys. Overall the Marauders (8-8 overall, 3-7 NSIC) shot 63.8 percent from the floor while making 57.9 percent of their 3-point attempts (11-of-19). SCSU (9-7, 6-4) made 50.8 percent of its shots, hitting just 5-of-15 from behind the arc.

Carr set the pace for the Marauders by making 4-of-5 trey attempts and hitting 7-of-9 shots overall. He also had three assists.

In addition to his four rejections and 18 points, Kreklow made 7-of-8 field goals, hauled down seven rebounds and distributed three assists.

Sipes was 3-for-5 behind the arc to tie his career-high for treys made in a game, set the previous night against Minnesota Duluth. The 18 points is a career-high for the freshman. He made 7-of-9 shots overall and grabbed seven rebounds.

Jaylan White tied his career high with eight assists. He also had nine points. Connor Hellebust added eight points and Trever Kaiser had seven points – all on free throws – and seven rebounds.

Trevon Marshall scored a game-high 36 points for the Huskies. He also dished five assists.

Ending the first half on an 11-2 run, the Marauders entered intermission with a 39-30 lead. After hitting treys on three straight possessions – the first by Carr and the next two by Sipes - UMary soon built their advantage to 60-43.

Behind the offensive tenacity of Marshall, the Huskies eventually cut the Marauders lead to a single possession at 83-80 with eight seconds left in the game. Kaiser then made a pair of free throws to seal the UMary victory.

The Marauders continue their four-game home stand when the University of Sioux Falls visits the McDowell Activity Center on Friday, Jan. 17.
