BISMARCK, ND -- The University of Mary Men's Soccer opened up regular season play in front of a slew of fans lining the side of the UMary Campus Pitch. The Marauders battled hard, controlling the pace of play throughout the entirety of the game against in-state opponent, University of Jamestown. A goal in the 34
th minute by Jamestown proved to be the only one of the game, giving the Jimmies a 1-0 win.
Â
With the loss the Marauders fall to 0-1 on the season and the Jimmies improve to 2-1.
Â
UMary had several opportunities to score but just could not find the back of the net. The Marauders got off 12 shots with six of them being on goal.
Â
Tresor Mugawaneza had two shots that were just inches from getting the Marauders on the board. In the fifth minute of play the freshman struck the left upright. He then drilled the crossbar in the 22
nd minute, narrowly missing another goal. Mugawaneza led the Marauders with four shots, two of which were on goal.
Â
Zack Jensen also met the frustration of hitting the crossbar, barely missing a goal when he hit the crossbar on an attempt in the 19
th minute.
Â
Jamestown was able to score off a header that snuck over the outstretched arm of Marauders Keeper,
Lukas Billhardt. Luis Zepeda was the Jimmie who found the net off an assist from Jacob Grosvenor.
Â
Billhardt recorded five saves on the game.
Â
"We've made a lot of progress, I thought the total effort of the team was great," stated head coach
Dave Cook. "We're starting to solve the equation."
Â
"I feel very confident that we're going to respond in a big way," said Cook when discussing this Sunday's match against Texas A&M International. "When you have a game that leaves a bad taste in your mouth, the best thing that can happen is to get the opportunity to play right away"
Â
The Marauders will get that opportunity to play right away as they head to Rapid City, SD to play Texas A&M International in a neutral site game. Game time is set for 12 PM on Sunday, September 8.
