Â
WELCH NAMED NSIC DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Playing an instrumental role in a pair of game-winning goals in a pair of shutouts, University of Mary senior
Kylee Welch was named the Northern Sun Defensive Player of the Week as the Marauders opened the 2019 regular season with two victories. A midfielder/defender from Bismarck, ND, the 2018 All-NSIC performer earned one assist and led a defense that allowed just a combined 14 shots with only eight on frame in the team's first two games of the season to finish undefeated at the Rimrock Classic in Billings, MT. In the opener, Welch stole the ball from Black Hills State University and sent a forward pass to forward
Sidney Burrell. Burrell blasted a shot from the top right corner of the penalty area that was headed into the net by the Yellowjackets defender for an own goal and the only counter UMary needed in a 2-0 victory. The Marauders gave up just four shots – two on frame – in the win. Welch followed up by earning the assist on the Marauders lone goal in a 1-0 win over tournament host MSU Billings, providing a thru ball to former Century High School teammate Hannah Richer in the 59th minute of play. Defensively the Marauders limited the Yellowjackets to 10 shots – six on frame – and withstood five corner kicks in the shutout.
