Big blows lead Mavericks past Marauders in UMary's first Saturday home game of season

BISMARCK, ND – Limited to a handful of hits on the day, the University of Mary baseball team couldn't keep pace with a potent Minnesota State University attack in the first Saturday home game of the season for the Marauders. Playing at Municipal Ballpark for the first time this season, UMary dropped both ends of the Northern Sun doubleheader to the Mavericks, 6-0 in the opener and 11-2 in the night cap on the Marauders home field.

GAME 1 Minnesota State 6 UMary 0
The Mavericks scored all the runs they needed in the first inning, crossing the plate three times in a game Minnesota State (21-9 overall, 12-5 NSIC) ace Cam Kline kept a tight leash on the Marauders attack. UMary (9-17, 5-9) managed just five hits and a walk off Kline, who struck out eight Marauders in the seven-inning complete game.

PIVOT POINT
The first three hitters in the Mavericks lineup posted hits to start the game, highlighted by a two-run single from Jordan Hart. Teddy Peterson later drove home Hart with a one-out single to center. The Marauders best attempt to cut into the deficit came in the fourth inning. Two of the first three UMary batters reached base on Minnesota State errors but the Marauders couldn't capitalize.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Five different Marauders had a hit in the game
  • Jaxon Ford had a walk and a single and caught five fly balls
  • Connor Doll made a spectacular diving grab of line drive in the first inning to prevent another run from scoring, then caught a line drive off his shoe tops from the next hitter in the lineup to conclude the opening inning
  • Ian Fisher allowed one run and two hits in two innings of relief

STAT OF THE GAME
Both teams turned a pair of double plays in the game…. MSU committed the only two errors of the game.

GAME 2 Minnesota State 11 UMary 2
Unable to answer several big blows from the Mavericks bats, the Marauders couldn't match Minnesota State's offensive production in game two. The Mavericks hit three home runs – two from Ty Buck – and totaled four extra base hits for the second straight game to one extra base hit for the Marauders.

PIVOT POINT
After retiring the side in order in the first inning, Andrew Brooks walked the first two Mavericks hitters in the second inning and it cost the Marauders dearly. After pitching a complete game win in the opener, Cam Kline served as the designated hitter in game two and doubled deep to left field in the second inning to plate two runs. MSU added three more runs in the third and two in the fourth before delivering a knockout blow in the sixth when four runs crossed the plate.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Freshman right fielder Jaxon Kostka hit his second home run of the year in the third inning, a solo blast over the left field wall. He added another single later in the game.
  • Chris Scott had an RBI single
  • Connor Doll scored the Marauders other run in the game and had a hit. Doll also laid out parallel to the ground towards his glove side to make another spectacular diving grab.
  • Fr. RHP Daniel Turner pitched 3.2 scoreless innings, striking out four while allowing two hits and a walk.
  • Ty Buck was 2-for-4 with two home runs, scored three runs and drove in four

STAT OF THE GAME
The top four hitters in the MSU lineup each had two hits and combined to finish 8-for-16 with three home runs, nine runs, scored and eight RBIs.
