Bismarck, ND – Playing at home for the first time this season, the University of Mary baseball team used a dominant effort on the mound by freshman
Jonathan Draheim to earn a comfortable 6-1 win in the opener against Concordia-St. Paul. The Marauders hopes for a sweep fell just short in a 7-6 11-inning setback that featured a ninth inning game-tying pinch hit home run by UMary freshman
Alex Kowski.
GAME 1 UMary 6 Concordia-St. Paul 1
Jonathan Draheim pitched a complete game in the Marauders victory, limiting the Golden Bears offense to just six hits and a walk in his seven inning performance. The UMary freshman from Jordan, MN, struck out five in earning his second collegiate win. Dominant late in the game, he retired 11 straight hitters to end the victory. He was aided by a Marauders offense that posted nine hits and a defense that didn't commit an error.
PIVOT POINT
Tied 1-1 two innings, the Marauders broke loose with three runs in the third and two more in the fourth. With a pair of runners on base after a single and a steal by
Connor Doll and a walk to
Darius Barlas,
Jesus Payan ripped a triple to score both runners. The Marauders designated hitter then scored himself on a ground out to short by
Daulton Sauce… After
Jaxon Kostka doubled to lead off the fourth inning,
Jaxon Ford and Barlas both hit run-scoring singles to provide Draheim more than enough runs.

Draheim generated six outs on ground balls and six outs on fly balls, in addition to his five strikeouts. CSP also lost baserunners on a pair of double plays and had a runner thrown out attempting to steal.

Trailing by as many as four runs midway through the game, Marauders freshman
Alex Kowski launched a massive 2-run pinch hit home run in the ninth inning to force extra innings. Unable to complete the comeback with a possible sweep in site, the Marauders suffered a tough loss when the Golden Bears scored the winning run in the 11
th inning on a defensive miscue.
PIVOT POINT
After the Marauders stranded a runner on third and one out in the 10
th inning, the Golden Bears took advantage of another chance in the 11
th inning. Isaac Hormann earned a leadoff walk, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt and claimed third on a wild pitch. After
Chris Scott came into the game from left field to pitch, the senior struck out the first batter he faced for the second out of the inning. Scott then induced a ground ball by Ryan Christopher but the Marauders defense was unable to make the play, allowing Hormann to score the winning run.

- Scott was 2-for-4 with an RBI and a walk
- Sauce had two hits and drove in a run
- Payan scored twice and had a hit
- Hitless in his two previous collegiate at bats, Kowski crushed his home run deep to left field, scoring pinch runner Seth Siverson
- Brandon Gill allowed one hit and two unearned runs in three innings of relief, striking out four
- Charles Bielejeski pitched 2.1 scoreless innings of relief, striking out two, walking one and allowing two hits
- Quentin Evers pitched 2.1 hitless innings of relief, walking two and striking out two
- Shane Benson earned the win for CSP, striking out three without allowing a hit or walk

Five Marauders pitchers combined to strike out 14 hitters while three Golden Bears pitchers struck out 17 UMary hitters.
