cBISMARCK, ND – Behind tremendous starting pitching performances by
Daniel Turner and
Zac Martin, the University of Mary swept a Northern Sun doubleheader from Bemidji State University. Turner tossed the Marauders first complete game shutout in five years as UMary claimed the opener 4-0. Martin struck out eight in an 8-1 Marauders victory over the Beavers in the nightcap.
GAME 1 UMary 4 Bemidji State 0
Daniel Turner was dominant on the hill for the Marauders (14-26 overall / 10-17 NSIC). The freshman righthander struck out six and scattered six hits in his seven inning complete game effort. He did not allow a walk in picking up his first collegiate victory.
All six hits came in three innings, but Turner escaped each time. In the second the Beavers (6-30 / 5-19) had runners on second and third with one out but he kept the Beavers off the scoreboard after inducing a popup on the infield and a ground ball out. Turner left runners on the corners in the third when he registered all three outs on strikeouts. After the Beavers led off the fifth with a double and a single, Turner recorded the opening out on a liner to short before catcher
Jonathan Draheim gunned out a base-stealing attempt at second. Turner then closed the inning on a strikeout. The final two innings were much less eventful as the lone BSU baserunner reached on an error.
PIVOT POINT
The Marauders scored all the runs they needed in the first, crossing the plate three times.
Jaxon Ford earned a walk and stole second to open the inning.
Connor Doll followed with a single before stealing second to place both runners in scoring position.
Darius Barlas ripped a 2-run single to plate Ford and Doll before scoring on a
Travis Stevens sacrifice fly.

The shutout was the Marauders first since defeating Wheeling Jesuit 11-0 behind
Jake Johnson and
Alec DeMaria on March 3, 2017. UMary's last conference shutout win was a combined effort from Sam Salveson and Travis Famias in a 2-0 win over Bemidji State on April 6, 2014. Michael Vollrath pitched the Marauders last complete game shutout when he went nine innings in an 11-0 win over Apprentice School on March 6, 2014.

Following up on the example set by
Daniel Turner in the first game,
Zac Martin proved overwhelming in game two. The Bismarck, ND, native struck out a season-high eight hitters and didn't issue a walk in seven innings. He scattered six hits and didn't allow a run until the seventh when the Marauders already held a seven-run lead. During one stretch he returned 15 of 16 hitters, starting when he induced a double play grounded in the first inning for the first two outs of the game.
PIVOT POINT
With Martin on point and keeping the Beavers in check, the first runs of the game didn't cross the plate until the fifth inning. A leadoff infield single by
Jonathan Draheim followed by
Seth Siverson reaching when he was hit by a pitch placed two runners on base for leadoff hitter
Jaxon Ford. Driving the ball the opposite way, the lefthanded swinging center fielder tripled into the left field corner to score Draheim and Siverson. Run-scoring doubles by
Connor Doll and
Jesus Payan followed to provide the Marauders an insurmountable 4-0 lead. The Marauders tacked on three more in the sixth on a 2-run single by Doll and an RBI double for Payan.

ON DECK
The Marauders close out their home schedule this weekend when the Mustangs of Southwest Minnesota State visit Municipal Ballpark. With rain threatening on the horizon, the three-game series has been moved up a day. The Marauders and Mustangs open the series with a doubleheader on Friday, April 26, starting at 10 am. On Saturday, April 27, a single 9-inning game starts at 12 noon. The series was originally scheduled for Saturday and Sunday, April 27-28.
