Pitching, defense dominates Marauders split with Mustangs

BISMARCK, ND – Bouncing back from a heartbreaking extra inning loss in the opener, several clutch performances lifted the University of Mary to victory in game two and a split with visiting Southwest Minnesota State University. Freshman Jonathan Draheim struck out 12 in the Marauders 1-0 nine-inning loss to the Mustangs in game one before UMary captured the second contest 2-1.

GAME 1 Southwest Minnesota State University 1 UMary 0 (nine innings)
Marauders freshman righthander Jonathan Draheim and Mustangs sophomore lefty John Bezdicek locked horns in an outstanding pitcher's duel between the two underclassmen. A scheduled seven-inning game, both hurlers lasted until the ninth inning before Southwest Minnesota State scored an unearned run in the top of the ninth on a pair of two out hits.

Draheim struck out a career-high 12 hitters in 8.2 innings of work. He allowed just five hits, one walk and a single unearned run. Bezdicek was just a solid, striking out nine in 8.1 innings of shutout ball, walking one and limiting UMary to five hits. Teddy Broxterman came in to record the last two outs and earn a save.

PIVOT POINT
With a runner on first, two outs and a 1-2 count to Jayden Fleck, the Mustangs second baseman fought off a difficult pitch from Draheim and dumped a shallow single into short right field to place runners on the corners for SMSU. Christopher Berg, making his first plate appearance of the game, followed by taking an 0-2 pitch the opposite way for a single to right just out of the grasp of a diving Daulton Sauce at first base, scoring Derek Smith for the lone run of the game.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Chris Scott was 2-for-3 with a double
  • Connor Doll had a single and a double in four trips to the plate
  • Jaxon Ford also had a hit for UMary
  • Five different players had hits for SMSU

STAT OF THE GAME
When Jonathan Draheim walked Brady Lanoue in the fourth inning, it snapped a string of 24 straight innings by UMary pitchers without walking a batter. The Marauders hadn't walked an opposing batter since the second inning in their last game with Minnesota Duluth.

GAME 2 UMary 2 Southwest Minnesota State 1
Parke McRae, Alec DeMaria and Charles Bielejeski combined to limit the Mustangs to five hits and one earned run to lead the Marauders to a 2-1 win over the Mustangs. UMary pushed across runs in the first and the fourth innings before turning the game over to DeMaria and Bielejeski.

Unable to cross the plate in the opener, UMary opened the scoring in the first inning when Jesus Payan singled to right field, scoring Connor Doll from second base. The Mustangs tied the game in the fourth on a solo home run to right field by Lanoue. Immediately the Marauders responded. With runners on the corners after singles by Doll and Payan in the home half of the fourth, Chris Scott hit a ground ball up the middle. Looking for a twin killing, the Mustangs only managed to get an out on second as Scott reached first safely with Doll scoring on the play.

PIVOT POINT
Holding a tenuous one run lead in the top of the second, Bielejeski struck out the first hitter of the inning before walking two straight. Fighting back, the senior righthander registered his second strikeout of the inning before issuing another walk to load the bases. Righting the ship, Bielejeski induced a ground ball to second baseman Sam Siverson for the easy flip to Daulton Sauce at first for the final out of the game.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Jesus Payan was 2-for-3 with an RBI
  • Connor Doll scored both Marauders runs and finished 1-for-3
  • Jaxon Ford finished 1-for-2
  • Parker McRae earned his fourth win of the season, allowing one run, four hits and one walk while striking out three in four innings
  • Alec DeMaria pitched a scoreless fifth inning after the Marauders retook the lead, striking out two hitters and walking one
  • Charles Bielejeski earned his third save with two scoreless innings of work, striking out three and allowing one hit and a walk
  • SMSU's Cole Petersen struck out six and allowed two runs and four hits in 5.1 innings
  • SMSU's Brady Lanoue was 2-for-2 with a home run

STAT OF THE GAME
