Payan, Barlas power display headlines Marauders efforts in losses to Bulldogs

SUPERIOR, WI – University of Mary seniors Darius Barlas and Jesus Payan both blasted home runs and a pair of double apiece to highlight the Marauders efforts in a doubleheader against the University of Minnesota Duluth. The duo combined for seven hits, two home runs, four doubles, five RBIs and five runs scored in the two games. Despite their efforts, the Bulldogs swept the visiting Marauders 12-5 and 6-4.

GAME ONE Minnesota Duluth 12 UMary 5
Darius Barlas and Jesus Payan were an impressive force for the Marauders as the 3-4 hitters in the UMary lineup combined to go 5-for-8 with four runs scored, three RBIs, three doubles and a home run. UMary (12-26 overall, 9-17 NSIC) scored a pair of runs in the top of the first but UMD (12-25, 9-17) responded by scoring multiple runs in four innings and one or more runs in five of six. The win completed a sweep of all three Northern Sun games in the weekend series.

PIVOT POINT
After leaving two runners stranded in the first inning, the Bulldogs took advantage of a Marauders error to score four times and take a lead that was never relinquished. After an RBI double by Eric Yachinich, a throwing error after the second of two singles allowed a pair of unearned runs to score. A third unearned run followed on a groundout and UMD led 4-2.

GAME 2 UMD 6 UMary 4
Jesus Payan hit a solo home run to lead off the second inning to open the scoring but the lead proved shortlived as the Bulldogs responded with six runs in the bottom of the inning. Barlas added a double in a non-conference game to wrap up the Payan and Barlas power display. The Marauders, who were limited to four hits in the game, fought to the end. UMary scored three times in the final two innings to pull within a pair of runs, leaving the bases full in each of the last two innings.

PIVOT POINT
The Bulldogs struck for six runs in the second inning, blasting four doubles and a triple in the inning to take a commanding 6-1 advantage from which the Marauders never fully recovered.
