Ford delivers five hits for Marauders in doubleheader loss to Bulldogs

DULUTH, MN – University of Mary pitchers Andrew Brooks and Alec DeMaria combined to fire a six-hitter over nine innings and center fielder Jaxon Ford produced five hits in two games in a pair of Marauders losses at the University of Minnesota Duluth. The Bulldogs captured the opener 22-3 before UMD edged visiting UMary 3-0 to sweep the Northern Sun doubleheader.

GAME 1 Minnesota Duluth 22 UMary 3
Freshman William Kranz posted a pair of hits and scored twice for the University of Mary in a game of big innings. The Marauders scored twice in the third inning to cut the Bulldogs lead in half. It was as close as UMary would come as UMD scored multiple runs in four of six innings and scored runs in five innings.

PIVOT POINT
The Marauders scored twice in the third inning when Nick McCann scored on a wild pitch and Kranz was driven home on a single by Darius Barlas to pull within 4-2. The Bulldogs responded with six runs in the bottom of the third, taking advantage of a pair of Marauders errors and a 2-run triple by Drew Stewart to gain a commanding 10-2 lead.

GAME 2 UMD 3 UMary 0
Andrew Brooks and Alec DeMaria held a potent Minnesota Duluth attack in check after an explosive opener. Brooks struck out six in six innings, allowing three runs on six hits and four walks. DeMaria continued his recent string of strong performances with a pair of scoreless and hitless innings, allowing just two walks while striking out three. PIVOT POINT
The game turned in the fourth inning. The Marauders threatened to score in the top of the inning when Darius Barlas led off with a double and Jesus Payan was hit with a pitch. The threat was soon extinguished as the next two UMary batters hit into a double play and popped out. In the bottom of the inning, UMD scored twice to take control of the game. After an infield single and a strikeout to open the bottom of the fourth inning, Eric Yachinich tripled home a run to left center and scored on a ground out to shortstop to provide the Bulldogs a 2-0 lead. UMD closed the scoring with a home run in the sixth inning.
