Aggressive Marauders tie school record for steals in pair of losses to Beavers

BISMARCK, ND – Chris Scott and Nick McCann both had three hits and Jesus Payan drove in three runs and stole three bases as the University of Mary baseball team rocked six Minot State University pitchers for 15 hits in the second game of the day, Additionally aggressive baserunning allowed the Marauders to tie a school record for steals in game two of the Northern Sun doubleheader. Despite the offensive onslaught by the Marauders, it was the defending NSIC champion Beavers that came out on top in both games, capturing the opener 7-0 before rallying for a 10-8 win in the nightcap.
 
GAME 1 Minot State 7 UMary 0
The Marauders (12-22 overall, 8-14 NSIC) were unable to solve Minot State (23-12, 16-8) starting pitcher Jaymon Cervantes in the opening game. UMary scratched out four hits and batters also reached on a pair of walks and twice when struck by pitches. After a pair of scoreless innings, the Beavers scored all the runs they needed in the third, plating three runs.
 
PIVOT POINT
After Jonathan Draheim and the Marauders held one of the top offenses in the NSIC to one hit and no runs over the first two innings, the Beavers struck for three runs in the third. After loading the bases, an error on a ground ball scored the first run of the game before Celestino Rodriguez singled home a pair of runs for a 3-0 lead.
 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Four Marauders each had a hit in the game. William Kranz, Nick McCann, Jesus Payan and Jaxon Ford all went 1-for-3 in the game
  • Ford had a double, the Marauders lone extra base hit
  • Darius Barlas reached base twice, once when he was struck by a pitch and the second time on a walk
  • Alec DeMaria pitched 1.2 innings of shutout relief, striking out two
  • Jonathan Draheim pitched five innings, allowing three earned runs and striking out three. It was the third straight start of five or more innings.
  • Jaymon Cervantes struck out eight while pitching a 7-inning complete game for Minot State, allowing four hits and two walks

GAME 2 Minot State 10 UMary 8
A haunting loss for the Marauders, the Beavers scored six runs in the ninth inning to complete a rally from a 4-run deficit to defeat UMary 10-8. The Marauders nearly returned the favor, leaving the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth with the winning run on first base.
 
The Marauders posted 15 hits in the game, cracking double digits for hits for the third time in four games. Chris Scott and Nick McCann both had three hits for UMary while three other Marauders had two hits each.
 
UMary used aggressive baserunning to build a 6-2 lead, tying the school record for steals with nine. Jesus Payan led the way with three, tying the UMary NCAA-era record for steals in a game. Barlas added a pair of steals and Ford, Connor Doll, Daulton Sauce and McCann all had one. The Marauders previously had nine steals against Post in 2014.
 
PIVOT POINT
The Beavers stunned the Marauders with six runs in the ninth inning, rallying from a 7-4 deficit to build a 10-7 lead. The big blow was a bases-loaded pinch hit double down the right field line by Mason Gifford to clear the bases and tie the game. A Michael Borst sacrifice fly brought home the go-ahead run before two UMary errors allowed two more runs to score for Minot State.

STAT OF THE GAME
UMary pitchers allowed just seven hits in the game… The Marauders left 13 runners on base to five for Minot State… UMary left the bases loaded in the seventh and ninth innings and two runners on base in the eighth, a total of eight in the final three innings.
 
ON DECK
After 12 scheduled home games, the Marauders visit the University of Minnesota Duluth for four games on Friday and Saturday, April 19-20. The first three games are NSIC contests with the fourth a non-conference contest.
