Career day for Payan headlines offensive outburst for Marauders in loss to Golden Eagles

WATFORD CITY, ND – Led by a career day from Jesus Payan, the University of Mary pounded out a season-high 17 hits. Payan had four hits – including a home run – and drove in five runs to tie the Marauders NCAA-era single game record for RBIs. Despite the hot bats, one big inning cost the Marauders dearly in a 16-8 loss to the University of Minnesota Crookston.

In a three-game series relocated to Watford City, ND, after wintery weather descended on Bismarck, ND, late in the week, the two teams spilt the first two contests on Saturday before the Golden Eagles captured the deciding game of the series on Sunday.

Seven different Marauders produced multiple hit games. UMary last generated 17 hits in a game last season against Aquinas College. This was the most hits the Marauders have posted against a Northern Sun team since posting 19 against Winona State in 2014.

Payan is the ninth Marauders player to drive in five runs in a game during UMary's NCAA era and it marks the 11th time overall since 2007. The last UMary player to post five RBIs in a game was Seth Meide in 2017, which was the second time the Wahpeton, ND, product had done so in his career. For the fourth time as a Marauder, Payan produced four hits in the game. The home run was the second on the season for the senior from Chihuahua, Mexico. Over the last five games Payan is 12-for-18 with eight runs driven in.

PIVOT POINT
The Marauders started hot, scoring the opening run in the first on an RBI single from Payan. UMary regained the lead at 3-2 on a two-run Payan single in the third before an RBI bunt single by Connor Doll in the fourth extended the Marauders lead to 4-2 after four innings. The game then took a bad turn for the Marauders in the fifth as the Golden Eagles plated eight runs to take a commanding 10-4 lead. A slow death as five different UMC hitters drove in one run at a time on a series of hits and a sacrifice fly, Reed Hjelle capped the inning with a 3-run home run.
