Marauders Fall In Hard Fought Game Against Dragons

BISMARCK, ND – The University of Mary women's basketball team welcomed Minnesota State Moorhead to town for a battle of two top tier NSIC teams. The Marauders battled hard against the NSIC's top team but came up just a bit short, losing to the Dragons 63-58.

With the loss the Marauders conclude regular season play with a 17-8 record, going 15-7 in NSIC play. The Dragons improve to 23-5 overall and 19-3 in the NSIC to lock up a conference championship. The Marauders wrapped up a third place finish in the NSIC North and fifth place overall.

The Marauders jumped out to a 15-9 lead early in the first quarter but then the Dragons went on a 20-0 run that extended into the second quarter, giving MSUM a 29-15 lead which was the largest of the ball game. MSUM led 34-23 heading into half. Gabbie Bohl was responsible for over half of the teams points with 14 in the first half.

UMary came out in the second half and slowly chipped away at the Dragons lead, moving within two points at the end of the third quarter.

The Marauders put Gabbie Bohl to work in the second half, running every possession through her. UMary was able to tie the game up in the fourth quarter. When Bohl fouled out with five minutes left in the ball game, Cassie Askvig and Macy Williams stepped up and kept the Marauders in the ball game. The Dragons came out on top in the end with a 63-58 victory.

The Marauders outrebounded the Dragons but MSUM doubling up UMary on offensive rebounds proved to be a big factor in the ball game.

The game featured arguably the two best point guards in the NSIC going head to head. The Northern Sun's assist leader Jacky Volkert of MSUM recorded eight assists on the ball game. Macy Williams, who is second in the conference in assists per game recorded five.

Gabbie Bohl dominated the game posting a big double-double with 24 points and 11 rebounds. The junior shot 69 percent from the field on the ball game.

Cassie Askvig also recorded a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds. She added three assists to her stat line.

Macy Williams scored ten points and had five assists during the game. The sophomore knocked down 57 percent of her shots on the day including an and one pull up jumper from 16 feet.

The Dragons were led by Megan Hintz who recorded a 20 and 10 double-double.

The Marauders will be back in action Wednesday, February 27 at 6 PM in the McDowell Activity Center to host the NSIC first round playoff game. UMary will battle Wayne State College for a chance to advance to the second round in Sioux Falls, SD. The theme for the ball game will be a white out so come decked out in all of your white Marauders gear.
