BISMARCK, ND – Propelled behind a career high in both points and rebounds by
Cassie Askvig, The University of Mary women's basketball team took down a tough NSIC opponent in Wayne State College. The Marauders beat the Wildcats by a score of 65-60.
With the win the Marauders improve to 12-6 overall and 10-5 in NSIC play. The Wildcats fall to 13-8 overall and 8-7 in the conference.
The Marauders took the lead early and never looked back from there, refusing to give up the lead for the entirety of the ball game.
Coral Gillette started the game doing what she does, knocking down a three. Gillette sparked UMary to take a 7-0 lead to begin the ball game. Gillette finished out the quarter with a buzzer beater from way deep to give to give the Marauders a 24-11 lead at the end of the first. Trey's by Gillette sandwiched a big 10 point first quarter by Askvig.
UMary continued their hot hand heading into the second quarter working their way up to the largest lead of the ball game of 14 points at the 4:22 mark of the second quarter. Askvig already had a double-double posted at half time with 18 points and 10 rebounds.
The Wildcats worked their way back into the ball game in the second half, getting as close as one point at the 5:21 mark in the fourth quarter. A clutch three by
Tonya Dvorak and good free throw shooting down the stretch helped UMary pull away and seal the deal on a 65-60 win over the Wildcats.
The Marauders dominated the glass, out rebounding the opposition 48 to 34. UMary recorded 17 assists on the ball game, six more than WSC.
Cassie Askvig recorded a monstrous game, recording over half of the teams points. The junior posted an enormous double-double with 34 points and 20 rebounds. Her 34 points was six more points than her previous career high. The 20 rebounds was two more than her old career high. This was Askvig's sixth double-double of the season. The Minot, ND native is now just ten points shy of reaching the 1,000 career points milestone.
Coral Gillette posted eight points and three assists on the night.
Gabbie Bohl faced double teams all night. The junior was able to put together five points and 13 rebounds. She recorded two big blocks on the night as well.
Macy Williams recorded seven assists on the night. The sophomore is averaging seven assists per game over the past four ball game. Williams added six points.
UMary will look to continue to protect home court as they welcome Augustana to town. The Marauders will take on the Vikings tomorrow, February 2 at 3:30 PM in the MAC.
