DULUTH, MN – Cassie Askvig and Lauren Rotunda both posted big double-doubles as the University of Mary and University of Minnesota Duluth squared off in a battle of two 2-0 teams in NSIC play. Despite dominating the glass and big performances by Askvig and Rotunda, the Marauders fell 87-75 to the Bulldogs.
 
With the loss the Marauders fall to 8-4 on the season and 2-1 in NSIC play. UMD improves to 6-3 overall and 3-0 in NSIC play.
 
FIRST HALF BREAKDOWN
The teams started the first quarter going back and forth with the Bulldogs holding a 9-8 advantage after four minutes of play. UMD then went on an 8-0 run to take a 17-8 lead. The Bulldogs were able to extend the lead to as much as 14 in the second quarter with the Marauders closing the gap to head to half down 11. The Bulldogs were able to hold Cassie Askvig quiet in the first half, holding her to just five points. Lauren Rotunda led the Marauders with 10 points and eight rebounds in the first half. Both teams shot 48 percent from the field in the first half but five three's by UMD off of 41.7 percent shooting from deep proved to be the difference early.


 
SECOND HALF BREAKDOWN
Cassie Askvig exploded in the second half, recording an impressive 19 points in an attempt to bring the Marauders back into contention. The Marauders chipped away a bit at the lead in the third quarter, heading into the fourth down nine. UMary was able to bring it as close as six points in the fourth quarter but for every run the Marauders had, the Bulldogs had a response.

The Marauders return home next weekend for their NSIC home openers. UMary hosts MSU Moorhead on Friday, December 13 at 5:30 PM. They follow that up with a matchup with Northern State on Saturday, December 14 at 3:30 PM.
