Marauders Take Down #22 MSUM Behind Strong Offensive Showing

BISMARCK, ND – A dominant offensive performance led the University of Mary women's basketball team to a big 21 point victory over the #22 Minnesota State University Moorhead Dragons. Behind 50.8 percent shooting from the field and 45.5 percent shooting from deep, the Marauders would take down their NSIC foe by a score of 89-68. Four different Marauders found themselves in double figures on the night with another two recording nine points. Cassie Askvig led the way with 26 points off of 50 percent shooting from the field and 100 percent from the charity stripe. Coral Gillette (18), Macy Williams (12), and Lexie Schneider (10) joined Askvig in double digits. With the victory, the Marauders have ended an eight game winning streak by the Dragons in the UMary-MSUM series.
 
With the win the Marauders improve to 9-4 overall and 3-1 in NSIC play. MSUM falls to 8-3 overall and 3-1 in the conference.
 
FIRST HALF BREAKDOWN
It was a strong 13 point first half performance by Cassie Askvig that sparked the Marauders big first half, heading to intermission with a 41-34 lead over the Dragons. A pair of timely three pointers by Coral Gillette and a total of eight first half points for Gillette helped extend the Marauders lead. A big difference in the first half came from the free throw line where UMary knocked down all nine of their attempts compared to just three of five by the Dragons.
 
SECOND HALF BREAKDOWN
A strong shooting first half shown up by an even stronger shooting second half. UMary knocked down 56.7 percent of their shots from the field and 66.7 percent of their shots from behind the arc in the half, making six big shots from deep to keep separation between them and their opposition. The Dragons started the second half on a 9-2 run to even the score up at 43 just over three and a half minutes into the third quarter. The Marauders responded, closing out the third quarter on a 20-7 run to take a 13 point lead into the fourth quarter. UMary continued to build upon the lead in the fourth quarter, growing the lead to 21, which would be the largest of the game, and the difference when the final buzzer rang.
