Marauders Down Cobbers In Front Of Packed House In Home Opener

BISMARCK, ND – With several new faces taking the mat for the University of Mary wrestling team, one thing remains constant and that is the ability to draw massive crowds and dominate on the home mat. The Marauders won nine of ten matches tonight in their dual against the Concordia College Cobbers, downing them by a score of 28-6. The McDowell Activity Center was packed with fans to witness the Marauders home opener with a total of 927 fans in attendance.
 
The win improves UMary to 1-0 on the season and drops the Cobbers to 0-1.
 
Jeremy Leintz got things rolling for the Marauders in the 125 class with a 15-8 decision to put the Marauders up 3-0. Leintz made his move in the second period with a reversal and a pair of takedowns, he finished strong in the third to claim the win.
 
With things even at one in the 133 class, Laken Boese recorded a takedown in the third period to seal the deal on a win by a 3-1 decision to give UMary a 6-0 lead.
 
Trevor Fauver (141) made it three wins in a row for the Marauders to start the dual when he won his bout by an 8-2 decision. Fauver started strong and finished strong, posting four points in the first and third period. This gave the Marauders a 9-0 lead.
 
Anthony Velazquez (149) lost by fall to bring the score to 9-6.
 
Braydon Huber got the Marauders back on track with a 7-3 decision. The 157 matchup featured lots of first period scoring followed by just one point in the second and one point in the third. Huber's early lead held, taking the victory and giving UMary a 12-6 lead.
 
Payton Hume (165) took an 11-6 decision to put the Marauders up 15-6. Hume recorded a pair of takedowns in the first to put himself up 4-1. He maintained his lead, going ahead 6-2 heading into the final period where he began with a reversal followed by a takedown to seal the victory.
 
Dante Springsteen (174) used his incredible quickness to dominate his opponent. A pair of takedowns in both the first and third and his ability not to let his opponent score gave him a win by an 11-3 major decision.
 
Austin Eichmann (184) entered the third period tied up at two. He used an escape and a takedown to retake the lead and claim victory by a 6-3 decision. This put the Marauders up 22-6.
 
#6 Phillip Springsteen, wrestling at 197 tonight exploded during the first period of his bout, showing his immense strength over his opponent. He began the match with a takedown followed by a four point near fall. He added another takedown and a two point near fall to his total to put himself up 10-1 after the first period. Springsteen would hold on from there to take an 11-7 decision and put the Marauders up 25-6.
 
Dominic Tudor (285), towering over his opponent, claimed victory by a 6-3 decision. Tudor scored a pair of points in each period to clinch the win and seal the deal on the Marauders 28-6 victory.
 
The Marauders will be back in action on Saturday, November 8 as they head to Fargo for the Bison Open.
