Burrell posts pair of counters in Marauders 4-1 win over Wolves

BISMARCK, ND – Sidney Burrell scored a brace of goals and added an assist as the University of Mary overcame a slow start before rolling past Northern State University 4-1. The Wolves tallied first before the Marauders scored the next four goals, including three in the second half.

Originally scheduled as the Marauders home and conference opener, lighting forced the postponement of the original meeting with the Wolves on Sept. 20. With today's victory, UMary improved to 10-4-2 overall and 8-4-2 in the Northern Sun, jumping up to sixth in the NSIC standings with 26 points and one game to play. Should the Marauders win their regular season finale against Minot State University on Friday, Nov. 8, UMary could finish as high as fifth in the league standings. Already guaranteed a spot in the NSIC tournament, the best seed UMary could earn is sixth and the lowest is seventh.

The Wolves (4-12-1, 2-11-1) stunned the Marauders with a breakaway goal in the 22nd minute by Shianne Rosselli, who tracked down a ball played over the top of the UMary defense to score her fifth goal of the season.

Limited to just three shots in the first 38 minutes, Burrell knotted the game 1-1 in the 40th minute of play. Taking a feed from Hannah Richter, the senior forward placed a shot high over Northern State goalkeeper Morgan Bury to give the Marauders offense a needed boost.

The Marauders then dominated the second half, owning a 10-2 edge in shots and scoring three times in the final 45 minutes of play.

After narrow misses on several early opportunities to start the second half , Samantha Guzman posted the game-winning goal at the 64:12 mark. Following a scramble off a corner kick, Yasmina Dokara located Guzman in front of the net to give UMary a 2-1 advantage.

Burrell doubled the Marauders lead 84 seconds later, scoring her fifth goal of the season off another Dokara helper. Maureen Sullivan put the game out of reach in the 82nd minute when Burrell fed the freshman the ball just inside the top right of the penalty area.

The Marauders held a 16-3 edge in shots plus the advantage in shots on frame (11-2) and corner kicks (6-2). Nine different Marauders fired shots in the game with Burrell pacing the squad with four.

UMary hosts Minot State University in the regular season finale at 3:30 pm on Friday, Nov. 8, at the MDU Resources Community Bowl. The Marauders begin the NSIC tournament on Nov. 13 at a site yet to be determined.
