Jaylan White scored the winning basket with 8.8 seconds left in the game to rally the visiting Marauders past Minot State University 56-53. It was the Northern Sun season opener for both teams.
Down by 11 with seven minutes to play, UMary (5-1 overall, 1-0 NSIC) turned the game over to White and the Marauders guard owned the remainder of the game. White scored all his 13 points down the stretch and added four assists and four rebounds in the game.
Trailing 49-38 after Kyle Beisch hit a 3-ball for the Beavers (6-1, 0-1), White tallied his first points of the night on a pair of free throws with 6:49 left in the game. After White hit another set of free throws and
Josh Sipes added one, the senior guard knocked down a jumper with over five minutes left in the game. The St. Charles, Iowa, native soon capped a ten-point Marauders run with a trey with under three minutes left to pull UMary within 49-48.
Kody Dwyer snapped the Marauders run with a dunk at 1:44 to push the Beavers advantage to 51-48.
Matthew Kreklow followed with a jumper and UMary again trailed by a single point.
Following misses by both teams, Minot State's Trevor Rothstein was fouled grabbing a defensive rebound. Sent to the line for a 1-and-1, Rothstein missed and
Wyatt Carr snagged the rebound.
In a wild final minute, a jumper by White with 44 seconds gave the Marauders their first lead in over a dozen minutes of play at 52-51. Dwyer then responded with a layup with 25 seconds left to push the home team back in front.
Once again the Marauders turned the ball back to White and the all-conference guard responded, hitting a layup for the winning points with 8.8 seconds on the clock.
Not done, Minot State's Max Cody launched a trey that seemed to go halfway through the cylinder before rimming out. Kreklow nabbed the rebound, was fouled and hit a pair of free throws to provide the final margin in the game.
The contest featured ten lead changes by each team. The Marauders largest lead in the game was the three-point margin at the end of the game.
With both team's defenses taking center stage, the Marauders won the game at the line. The Marauders shot 39.6 percent from the field to 35.5 percent for the Beavers, but Minot State held an 8-5 advantage in made treys and a 22-19 edge in made field goals. UMary, though, was 13-of-19 at the free throw line while Minot State finished 1-of-4.
White, who went over 800 career points and 250 career assists in the game, hit all four of his free throws in the game.
Connor Hellebust posted a team-high 15 points in the win. The junior guard missed only one of his seven free throw attempts and hit half his eight field goal attempts. He also added six rebounds.
Kreklow had his first double double of the season, combining 12 points and 10 rebounds. The junior post made both free throws and 5-of-9 field goal attempts. A big part of a dominant defensive effort for the Marauders, Kreklow had four blocked shots and had two steals.
Carr led all players with a career-best 11 rebounds. He also had five points, two assists and a steal.
Glenn Jordan scored seven points off the bench.
Beisch hit six treys and scored 22 points for MSU. Dwyer added 11 points. Cody had five points, nine assists and eight rebounds.
The Marauders remain on the road with a weekend series at St. Cloud State and Minnesota Duluth on Dec. 6-7.
