First period explosion carries Marauders past Bobcats 5-3

LOGAN, UT – Scoring all the goals the University of Mary needed in the first period, the Marauder defeated Montana State University 5-3 to finish the Beehive Showcase undefeated in four games. Andrew Huber scored twice in the Marauders four-goal first period uprising.

Ranked first in the ACHA Division II West region and second in the country, the Marauders eighth straight win improved UMary's season mark to 24-3. In the program's second season, the Marauders remain undefeated against West region teams with a record of 47-0-1. UMary has also swept all three games this season against MSU. Ranked sixth in the West region poll, the Bobcats are 10-6-0.

Down a goal just 97 seconds into the game, Huber evened the contest at 8:14 of the first period, igniting a run of four straight goals for UMary. Less than three minutes later, Huber struck again – this time shorthanded - to give the Marauders their first lead of the game. At 12:11, UMary scored its third goal in less than four minutes when Phillip Silveria found the back of the net. The onslaught continued when Seth Cushing scored an unassisted goal at 18:49 to send the Marauders into the first intermission leading 4-1.

Unfazed, the Bobcats rallied with a pair of goals in the second period, pulling within 4-3 with the third period yet to play.

Tightening up the defense, the Marauders kept the Bobcats off the scoreboard as Lance Knudson made 11 of his 34 saves in the game. Alex Flicek finally gave UMary some comfort with ten seconds left in the game on an unassisted goal into an empty net.

The Marauders fired 59 shots on goal with MSU goalkeeper Brock Vosburgh stopping 54.

Cushing joined Huber with a pair of points in the game, adding an assist to his goal. Overall seven Marauders skaters registered a goal or an assist in the game.

UMary returns home Saturday, Nov. 30, to face Williston State College in a home-and-away weekend series between the two clubs.
