PROVO, UT – The University of Mary exploded for a half-dozen goals in the final period of play to sweep past Brigham Young University in ACHA Division II hockey on the opening day of the Beehive Showcase.
Alex Flicek scored two goals and added an assist to lead the Marauders efforts against the Cougars as UMary won its 60
th game in program history.
Sitting atop the ACHA D2 West Region rankings for the 14
th straight poll, the Marauders improved to 21-3 on the season and remain undefeated against teams from the West. In just their second year as a program, UMary is 44-0-1 against West region opposition.
The second-ranked team in the country, the Marauders and the Cougars remained scoreless until early in the second period. Flicek found the net first, scoring at the 3:48 mark to send UMary into the second intermission leading 1-0.
The floodgates opened in the third period as the Marauders scored three times in the first seven minutes of the final stanza. Flicek scored his second goal of the game to get UMary rolling at the 1:33 mark.
Marshall Tschida (5:01) and
Josh Colleaux (6:32) followed with goals of their own. After BYU closed within 4-1, UMary responded with goals from
Andrew Heckaman,
Paul Witzke and
Andrew Huber to solidify a Marauders win.
Huber joined Flicek with a 3-point night, scoring one goal and adding two assists. Others will multiple points in the game for the Marauders was Tschida (power play goal, assist), Heckaman (goal, assist),
Matt Winkle (two assists) and Witzke (goal, assist).
The Marauders held a 54-22 edge in shots for the game.
Kyle Hayden started in net for UMAry and stopped 21 shots. Jeremy Manzella posted 47 saves for BYU.
UMary continues its four-game trip to the Beehive with a contest against Arizona State University on Friday, Nov. 22.
