LOS ANGELES, CA – The University of Mary women's basketball team found themselves in a back and forth thriller against Simon Fraser University at the CCA Division II Tipoff today. Four quarters was not enough for the two teams that combined for several different lead changes, needing overtime to decide the winner. SFU had the ball roll their way in the end, claiming a 70-67 overtime win. Cassie Askvig led the team with a 23 point, 10 rebound double-double.
FIRST HALF BREAKDOWN
The first half featured an even offensive attack by the Marauders with three different players tying for the team lead with six first half points. Askvig, Rotunda, and Hearn all had six of their points with Gillette recording five of hers. The Marauders jumped out to a 6-1 lead early in the first, but the Clan fought back to take a 16-14 lead into the second quarter. SFU started the second quarter by building their lead to 26-19 but UMary closed out the quarter on an 11-2 run to take a two point lead into intermission.
SECOND HALF BREAKDOWN
The third quarter was the best quarter for the opposing Clan, outscoring the Marauders 21-13 to take a six point lead into the fourth. UMary clawed their way back into contention in the final two minutes of play. The Marauders trailed by six when Askvig hit a jumper in the paint to bring the score to 60-56. UMary, trailing by four with under a minute remaining didn't throw the towel in, they instead turned to two of their leaders to get the job done in a pressure situation. Macy Williams knocked down a jumper with 53 seconds remaining to bring the game within two. Askvig followed that up by hitting another jumper in the paint to tie the game up at 60 and force overtime.
OVERTIME
The first two minutes of overtime was a scoreless affair before Lauren Rotunda knocked down a pair of free throws followed by a bucket and the foul by Cassie Askvig to put the Marauders up five. The Clan rallied together a 7-0 run to claim a two point lead with just over a minute to play. That's when Macy Williams stepped up again, laying the ball in to even the game up with under a minute remaining. SFU scored with just 15 seconds remaining and then knocked down a free throw with seconds on the clock to put the Clan up three and allow them to take a 70-67 victory.
