MANDAN, ND – A dominant second period rallied the University of Mary past visiting University of Saint Thomas 5-3 in ACHA Division II hockey. The Marauders struck three times in the middle period to overcome an early deficit.
Five different Marauders accounted for the UMary goals.
Kyler Moore led the Marauders offense with a goal and two assists.
Alex Flicek and
Zach Garrett both had a goal and an assist with Seth Cushman and
Andrew Heckaman posting a goal each.
Moore opened the scoring at the 6:38 mark off a feed from
Johnny Witzke to give the Marauders an early lead. The Tommies fought right back, knotting the game at the 9:46 mark before taking a 2-1 lead with just 57 seconds remaining in the first period.
The second period was dominated by the Marauders. Garret pulled the Marauders even at 6:44 before a pair of late goals changed the complexion of the game. Heckeman found the net at 17:34 and Cushing scored with 59 seconds on the clock before the end of the period to take a 4-2 lead into the second intermission.
Flicek kept the Marauders rolling. Just 1:45 into the final stanza, the forward from Bismarck, ND, scored the fourth straight goal to generate a 5-2 advantage. The Tommies proved unable to retaliate until the 18:18 mark, leaving too little time to mount a rally.
Lance Knudson made 24 saves for the Marauders. Tommies goaltender Jack Hardwick faced 56 shots, stopping 51.
The Marauders improve to 19-3 with the win. The Tommies slip to 10-4. The two teams close out the weekend series on Sunday, Nov. 17. Faceoff is set for 2 pm at the Schwan Cadillac Rink at the Starion Sports Complex in Mandan, ND.
