Marauders on roll entering NSIC soccer tournament Wednesday against Mavericks

PLAYOFF WEDNESDAY
Earning a Northern Sun women's soccer tournament berth for the third straight season, the University of Mary women's soccer team will tangle with Minnesota State University in the first round. The Mavericks will host the Marauders at 1 pm on Wednesday, Nov. 13, at The Pitch in Mankato, MN.
 
TOURNAMENT TIME
The 2019 eight-team Northern Sun women's soccer tournament begins on Wednesday, Nov. 13. First round matchups include #8 Wayne State at #1 Concordia-St. Paul, #7 Southwest Minnesota State at #2 Augustana, #6 UMary at Minnesota State and #5 St. Cloud State at #4 Bemidji State. The semifinals are set for Friday, Nov. 15, with the championship game on Sunday, Nov. 17. The team with the highest seed following the opening round will host the semifinals and championship game. The NSIC tournament champion earns an automatic bid to the NCAA tournament.
 
BACK-TO-BACK-TO-BACK
This is the third straight season the Marauders have earned a spot in the NSIC tournament. This is the second-longest playoff streak for the Marauders after qualifying for seven straight years from 2006-2012.
 
FIRST ROUND SUCCESS
The Marauders are one of only three teams in the NSIC to advance to the NSIC semifinals the past two years, along with Minnesota State and Augustana. In 2017 the Marauders defeated Minot State in the opening round of the NSIC tournament. Last year the Marauders played top seed Bemidji State to a draw and advanced to the semifinals over the Beavers following a shootout…. All-time in the opening round of the NSIC tournament UMary is 4-3-2.
 
RECORDS
The Marauders finish the 2019 regular season with a mark of 11-4-2 overall and a Northern Sun record of 9-4-2. UMary finished sixth in the NSIC standings with 29 points.

The Marauders finished the regular season 11-4-2. The 11 victories is the second-most regular-season wins for the Marauders during the NCAA era, equaling 2017 and 2011 while only trailing the 14 wins the team posted in 2007.

REWIND
The Marauders closed out the 2019 regular season with a pair of wins at home… Overcoming a 1-0 deficit to Northern State in a makeup game of the conference opener, Sidney Burrell tied the game in the 39th minute and second half goals by Samantha Guzman, Burrell and Maureen Sullivan led the Marauders to a 4-1 win over the Wolves. Burrell finished with two goals and an assist and Yasmina Dokara had two assists… The Marauders wrapped up an undefeated home season (6-0-2 record) with a 2-1 win over instate rival Minot State. The Beavers scored first before Maureen Sullivan tied the game in the 38th minute. Emma Davies – who assisted on the opening goal – scored the game-winner in the 49th minute.
 
NCAA CENTRAL REGION RANKINGS
The Marauders have appeared in both NCAA Central Region rankings. UMary was eighth in the first rankings released Oct. 30 and ninth in the Central region rankings posted Nov. 6. The next NCAA rankings should be released Nov. 13. Teams from the Northern Sun, the Mid-America Athletic Association and the Great American Conference comprise the 35-team NCA Central Region. Seven teams advance to the NCAA Region tournament set to begin Nov. 23. Winners of the NSIC, MIAA and GAC tournament earn automatic bids to the NCAA tournament with the remaining four spots awarded on an at-large basis tied to the regional rankings.  
 
HELPING HAND
Malia Brudvik has tied the Marauders NCAA era record for assists in a single season with nine, equaling the efforts of UMary Hall of Famer Jessica Janusz (2008)… The senior defender also tied a Marauders NCAA era record for assists in a game with three helpers in the 4-0 win over Minnesota Duluth. Her efforts equaled the mark set by Jessica Curl (2011) and Janusz (2008). It was the third time this season she has posted multiple assists in a game… Brudvik is tied for third in the NSIC in assists this season
 
DEEE-FENSE PART 1
The Marauders are poised to set a program-record for goals allowed/game. At the end of the regular season, UMary's Goals—Against Average is 0.507. Entering this season the team record was a goals against average of 0.74 in 2007 and 0.80 in 1999.
 
DEEE-FENCE PART 2
The Marauders defense has been stellar this season. UMary ranks 13th in the nation and 1st in the NSIC in goals against average (0.444) and third nationally and 1st in the NSIC in save percentage (.911). The team has allowed just seven goals – more than one goal in a game just once - and posted nine shutouts. The opposition has been limited to only 9.9 shots/game with 5.3 shots in frame/game).
 
NCAA RANKINGS
With an dominant lock down defense, the Marauders rank 16th in the country in Goals Allowed Average at .507… the Marauders shutout percentage of .529 is 35th … UMary's save percentage of 0.893 is 6th … Madisyn Waltman is 17th in NCAA Division II in goals against average (0.507) and 9th in save percentage (0.889)… Hannah Richter is 69th in game-winning goals (3)... Malia Brudvik is 47th in total assists and 50th in assists/game.  
 
BLANKETY BLANK
The Marauders have nine shutouts in 17 matches this season.
 
SWEET 17
Madisyn Waltman continues to climb the UMary all-time goalkeeper shutouts leaderboard. The sophomore now has 17 clean sheets, to move her into a 4th-place tie with Carly Feiler. The record is 25 by Kristin Werner, followed by Rachael Dietrich (22), Brannigan Coyle (20), Carly Feiler and Waltman (17 each).  
 
2019 NORTHERN SUN WEEKLY RECOGNITION
NSIC Defensive Player of the Week
  • Kylee Welch played key role in both game-winning goals and helped pitch two shutouts over Black Hills State and MSU Billings (Sept. 16)
  • Malia Brudvik posted two assists in a win over SMSU and helped the UMary defense to a pair of shutouts, limiting teams to 11 shots total with nine on frame in the two games (Oct. 21)
 
NSIC Offensive Player of the Week
  • Hannah Richter, scored both goals in 2-1 victory over #4 Minnesota State (Oct. 7)
 
NSIC Special Recognition  
TEAMWORK
Ten different Marauders have combined to score the team's 32 goals this season. Hannah Richter leads the way with seven counters. Sidney Burrell and Maureen Sullivan both have five goals and Emma Davies, Patricia Martin, Samantha Guzman and Noelle Vigneri all have three goals with Kylee Welch, Yasmina Dokara and Tiffany Ohlhauser owning one each. 
 
NOTABLE
The 4th ranked Minnesota State Mavericks are the highest-ranked NCAA team that the Marauders have defeated in the regular season, a 2-1 UMary win earlier this season.
 
PENINSULA POWER
The Marauders have two transfers from Peninsula College in Post Angeles, WA, and the pair combined for the Marauders final goal against Wayne State. Samantha Guzman, a junior defender in her first season at UMary scored the goal with an assist going to Malia Brudvik, a senior defender who had previously played with Guzman at Peninsula. The pair also combined for a goal against SMSU with Guzman scoring the counter off a Brudvik assist.
 
DEBUTS
Several Marauders made their debut this season. Freshmen Rachel Neff, Noelle Vigneri, Brooke Boyer, Yasmina Dokara, Maureen Sullivan, Samantha Rosenkranz, Marriann Sentfer and junior Samantha Guzman, a transfer from Peninsula College, have all seen action in their first seasons at UMary.
 
SENIOR SALUTE
The Marauders have seven seniors who will all play key roles this season. All-NSIC midfielder/defender Kylee Welch and defender/forward Tiffany Ohlhauser are in their fourth season in the starting lineup and forward Sidney Burrell and Malia Brudvik are starting for a second straight season. Midfielder Taylor Pettigrew has moved into the starting 11. Kaelie Schumacher and Patricia Martin continue to play key roles in reserve.
 
25th SEASON OF MARAUDERS SOCCER
The first University of Mary soccer teams took to the pitch for the first time in 1995 and this season we are celebrating 25 seasons of Marauders men's and women's soccer.
 
G-OOOOOOO-AL
The Marauders exploded for seven goals in a 7-0 win against the Golden Eagles on Oct. 14 to set a team record for counters in an NCAA game. Additionally three Marauders – Noelle Vigneri, Maureen Sullivan and Emma Davies – each scored two goals and had an assist in the game. This is the first time UMary had thee players score two or more goals each in an NCAA game. The previous best was two when Amy Tanaka and Megan Wilson both tallied twice against MSU Moorhead on Oct. 12, 2008… The Marauders peppered the UMC net with 32 shots, a total exceeded by the school in an NCAA contest just once when UMary fired 43 shots at Sioux Falls in 2007. UMary finished with 26 shots on frame against UMC. The Golden Eagles had 10 total shots with just one on net… Not to be overlooked in the offensive onslaught, the Marauders posted two goals in just 15 seconds to open the scoring against UMC. Patricia Martin scored the game-winning goal at 15:31 and Noelle Vigneri doubled the Marauders lead at 15:46.
