Marauders overwhelm Aggies 10-0 to cap undefeated Icebreaker tournament run

MANDAN, ND – Playing their fifth game in five days to close out the 2019 Icebreaker tournament, the University of Mary scored five times with a man advantage and tied the program record for goals in a game as the Marauders crushed Utah State University 10-0.

Three different Marauders – Alexander Horner, Philip Silveria and Andrew Huber – scored two goals in the game and Zach Garrett posted five points with one goal and four assists. Eight of the 12 Marauders on the score sheet posted multiple points as the Marauders matched the ten goals scored earlier this season against North Dakota State University. The 10-goal margin of victory establishes a new program record.

A relatively close game through the first two periods, the Marauders scored two goals in both the first and second periods. Kyler Moore opened the scoring five minutes into the game before Garrett found the net at the 14:27 mark, ten seconds into a power play opportunity.

In the second, Horner and Silveria doubled the advantage with goals in the first 7:14 of the period.

The Marauders overwhelmed the Aggies in the third, and much of the damage was self-inflicted by Utah State. Of the six goals scored by the Marauders, four came on the power play, including three during one 5-minute major called on the Aggies.

Following goals by Silveria and Alex Flicek, Andrew Huber ignited a run of three power play goals in the span of 1:51 during the Aggies major penalty. Silveria and Johnny Witzke also took advantage of the man advantage. Horner finished off the scoring with another power play goal.

The Marauders finished 5-for-6 on the power play. The Aggies were 0-for-10. UMary took ten penalties for 20 minutes while Utah State had nine penalties for 37 minutes, including the 5-minute major and two 10-minute misconducts.

Lance Knudson earned the shutout win for the Marauders, stopping all 20 shots he faced in the game. Knudson remains undefeated in his Marauders career, picking up his 25th win without a loss in his second season at UMary.

Two Utah State netminders combined for 25 saves on 35 UMary shots.

Silveria posted four points with two goals and two assists. Marshall Tschida and Logan Kraft had three assists. Horner added an assist to his two goals.

UMary improves to 12-0 on the season and 36-0-1 against ACHA Division II West Region rivals over the last two seasons.

After playing nine games in the last 12 days, the Marauders next host Montana State University on Oct. 12-13.
