Marauders strike fast, often in 8-1 rout of Eagles

MANDAN, ND – One night after soundly defeating the two-time defending ACHA Division II national champion, the intensity level for the University of Mary never wavered as the Marauders manhandled Eastern Washington University 8-1. The Marauders scored four times in the first dozen minutes and cruised to a decisive victory over the visiting Eagles to close out day four of the Icebreaker tournament.

The Marauders, 11-0 on the season and 4-0 at the Icebreaker with one game left to go, defeated Florida Gulf Coast 3-1 on Saturday but there was no letdown by UMary after the noteworthy win.

Seth Cushing led the Marauders with two goals and an assist against the Eagles. He leads the Marauders with nine goals in 11 games this season. Noah Scordato added a goal and two assists for three points and five other Marauders added two points. Overall 13 Marauders produced at least one point in the game.

Johnny Witzke brought the crowd to their feet just 43 seconds into the game to set the pace for the Marauders. Less than three minutes passed before Marshall Tschida doubled the UMary lead to 2-0. At 7:58 Scordato tallied his first goal for the Marauders and the rout was on. Dalton Johnson completed the first period scoring when he found the net for a power play goal at 12:05, providing UMary a 4-0 advantage entering the first intermission.

The Marauders kept on the attack to start the second period as Cushing scored his first goal of the game less than three minutes in. Following Eastern Washington's lone goal of the game by Mitch Hunt at 4:40, Cushing responded with his second goal at 7:40 to rebuild UMary's five-goal advantage at 6-1 and force the Eagles to change goaltenders.

Not finished finding the net, Drew Lenertz added the Marauders seventh goal of the night with a unassisted effort with 8.5 seconds remaining before the second intermission.

Alexander Horner wrapped up the goalscoring for UMary just 2:11 into the third period.

A quiet night in goal for UMary, Kyle Hayden made 12 saves in the first two periods. Maysion Mattern played the final stanza for the Marauders and stopped both shots he faced in his first collegiate action.
