Hannah Richter ensured the University of Mary's longest conference road trip of the season ended in celebration, scoring a golden goal in the Marauders 2-1 victory at Upper Iowa University. It was the second goal of the game for the junior forward.
UMary entered the weekend on a three-game win streak and sitting in fifth place in the Northern Sun before suffering a 2-1 loss at Winona State on Friday. With four games to play, the Marauders are 8-3-2 overall and 6-3-2 in the NSIC for 20 points and are in a three-way tie for fifth place. The top four teams will host the opening round of the NSIC tournament as eight teams proceed to the conference playoffs.
Upper Iowa falls to 3-8-4 and 3-6-3.
A physical game, the Marauders opened the scoring late in the contest.
Sidney Burrell played a long ball from the UMary side of the pitch over the top of the Peacocks defense. Richter, outracing everyone to the ball and shielding off a defender, collected the ball just outside the top of the penalty area. A couple strides later she fired a left-footed shot to beat Peacocks goalkeeper Natalie Rudrud to the lower right corner of the net, giving the Marauders a 1-0 lead in the 77
th minute.
Scrambling to even the game on their Senior Day, the Peacocks took four straight shots at the UMary net before Jayna Morikawa scored on Upper Iowa's fifth attempt at 87:33 to send the game to overtime.
After a scoreless first extra session, the Marauders broke down the Peacocks defense early in the second overtime. Taking a pass from their defensive zone, Richter played a thru ball to Burrell that split a pair of Peacocks. Attempting to chip the ball over Rudrud from the top left of the penalty area, Burrell's shot hit off the cross bar and bounced back in front of the net. Beating everyone to the loose ball, Richter tapped home the ball from the top of the 6 yard box to end the game in the 103
rd minute.
This is the second time Richter has scored twice in a game this season for UMary, She also had two counters in the Marauders 2-1 win over #3 Minnesota State. Richter now has a team-leading six goals, including three game-winners.
Madisyn Waltman was kept busy in net, making eight saves for the Marauders to four for Rudrud.
The Marauders held a 15-14 edge in shots but the Peacocks held a 9-6 advantage in shots on frame. Upper Iowa also held a 4-3 lead in corner kicks.
The Marauders next host the University of Minnesota Duluth at 1 pm on Friday, Nov. 1. Three of UMary's last four games of the regular season are at home.
