Marauders dominant in 4-0 win over Bulldogs

BISMARCK, ND – Dominating on both ends of the field, the University of Mary women's soccer team rolled past the University of Minnesota Duluth 4-0 to remain in fifth place in the Northern Sun with three games left to play in the regular season. Hannah Richter and Kylee Welch keyed the Marauders efforts with a goal and an assist each.

The Marauders improve to 9-3-2 overall and 7-3-2 with 23 points in NSIC play. The Bulldogs fall to 5-9-2 and 3-8-2.

Playing the first half directly into a westerly wind blowing at over 21 mph, the Marauders weren't deterred on offense. Richter, after breaking down the Bulldogs defense, slid the ball to a wide-open Yasmina Dokara. The freshman forward didn't miss her opportunity, blasting home a shot from 15 yards out to give the Marauders a 1-0 lead in the 25th minute. Dokara's first collegiate goal also proved to be the game-winner.

The Marauders doubled their lead just 2:10 later. Richter, taking a through ball down the right side numbers from Welch, drove past UMD defenders and slid the ball past Bulldogs goalkeeper Sophia Grenz into the left corner at 27:05, sending the Marauders into intermission with a 2-0 lead.

Playing with the wind in the second half, UMary tallied twice off set pieces, both triggered by Malia Brudvik. The first came in the 65th minute when Sidney Burrell one-timed the ball into the top center of the net. Welch then capped the scoring off a brief scramble in the far right side of the goal area, knocking home the fourth goal of the game in the 80th minute.

The Marauders held a 10-4 edge in shots, placing seven shots on frame with all four of the Bulldogs efforts also on frame. UMary had a 4-2 advantage in corner kicks.

One of the nation's leaders in save percentage and goals against average, Madisyn Waltman made three saves for the Marauders for her tenth clean sheet of the season and the 18th of her career. She had help keeping the shutout when Cassidy Pierce cleared off a ball set to cross the goal line late in the opening half to preserve the Marauders then 2-0 advantage.

The Marauders next visit St. Cloud State on Sunday, Nov. 3, at 1 pm, in a meeting between two teams that entered Friday tied for fifth in the NSIC. UMary then closes the regular season at home with games against Northern State (Nov. 6) and Minot State (Nov. 8).
