Marauders win streak snapped by Warriors

WINONA, MN – A three-game win streak for the University of Mary came to an end in the Marauders 2-1 loss at Winona State University. After a scoreless opening half, the Warriors found the net twice and held off a late Marauders rally.

The Marauders took the first two shots of the second half but it was the Warriors that scored first when Courtney Wiencek tallied in the 52nd minute of play from just inside the top of the penalty area.

Winona State doubled its lead in the 70th minute. After Ellie Wardell hit the crossbar, Georgette Topalis cleaned up the rebound in the goal area for a 2-0 Warriors lead. It was the first time all season a team scored two goals in a game on the Marauders, who were second in the country in goals allowed at 0.26 per match.

After both teams traded shots, Maureen Sullivan took a feed from fellow UMary freshman Noelle Vigneri and scored from just inside the top pf the penalty area to close the Marauders gap to 2-1 at 81:59. It was her third goal of the season, all scored in the span of the last four UMary games.

Attempting to find the equalizer with time in short supply, the Marauders swarmed the ball in the final minute of play. After a shot attempt by Cassidy Pierce was blocked, Samantha Guzman and Kylee Welch both fired attempts on net but both shots were knocked away by Warriors goalkeeper Yanel Ortiz.

The Marauders (7-3-2 overall, 5-3-2 NSIC) held advantages in shots (16-14), shots on frame (8-5) and corner kicks (6-2) over the Warriors (6-8-0, 5-6-0).

UMary wraps up the weekend in Fayette, IA, when the Marauders face the Peacocks of Upper Iowa University on Sunday, Oct. 27, at 1 pm.
