Martin strikes again to lead Marauders to 1-0 win over Cougars

BISMARCK, ND – Scoring in her third straight game, senior Patricia Martin drove home the lone goal in a 1-0 University of Mary victory over visiting University of Sioux Falls. The win completes a Parents Weekend sweep for UMary and is the third straight win for the Marauders. The victory also pushes UMary into a tie for fifth place in the Northern Sun standings.

A senior from Helena, MT, Martin has keyed the Marauders three game winning streak, posting a goal in each game. She had the game-winning goal against both Minnesota Crookston on Monday and today against Sioux Falls and had the assist on Friday's game-winner against Southwest Minnesota State.

UMary improves to 7-2-2 overall and 5-2-2 with 17 points in the NSIC. USF is 2-10-1 and 2-7-1.

After scoring seven goals against Minnesota Crookston earlier in the week and three against Southwest Minnesota State, the Marauders couldn't solve the Cougars defense in the first half as USF packed their defenders deep in the zone and kept UMary at a distance. The Marauders made runs but just couldn't get free for a goal despite taking nine shots and giving up one.

The game changed early in the second half as the Marauders began to find more freedom on the attacking end. Taking a pass from Hannah Richter while all alone atop the left post, Martin slid the ball into the open net in the 51st minute for the only goal of the game.

UMary continued to attack but couldn't add to the lead.

The Marauders defense didn't allow the Cougars any room to operate. Sioux Falls managed just two shots in the game but neither were on frame and defenders Cassidy Pierce, Samantha Guzman, Malia Brudvik and Kylee Welch continually turned back the Cougars attack.

This is the eighth clean sheet of the season for UMary and goalkeeper Madisyn Waltman. The Marauders have allowed three goals this season in 11 games, the fewest in the NSIC and in the top five of NCAA Division II.

The Marauders dominated the stat sheet, taking 24 shots total and placing 15 on frame. USF managed two shots, both off target. UMary also had a 9-2 edge in corner kicks.

Next up for UMary is the Marauders longest road trip of the season with a visit to Winona State University on Friday, Oct. 25, and Upper Iowa on Sunday, Oct. 27.
