BISMARCK, ND – It was Senior Night for the University of Mary women's soccer team and the Marauders placed the spotlight on their seven student-athletes competing in their final year. Once the match started, that spotlight shined even brighter as the senior class scored the first two goals and combined for three of the five assists in the game as the Marauders rolled past Southwest Minnesota State University 3-0.
Sidney Burrell opened the scoring for the Marauders in the 21
st minute. Set up perfectly by fellow senior
Patricia Martin and junior forward
Hannah Richter, Burrell was left all alone just inside the penalty area and drove home her second goal of the season.
Less than 10 minutes later, Martin doubled the UMary lead to 2-0. On a corner kick triggered by
Malia Brudvik, freshman
Maureen Sullivan directed the ball to Martin just outside the left post. Without hesitation, Martin buried her shot for her second counter of the season at the 29:58 mark. It was also Martin's second straight game scoring a goal.
Samantha Guzman sealed the game for the Marauders. Gathering a free kick from Brudvik outside the top of the goal box, Guzman knocked home her second goal of the game at 53:41 to push the Marauders advantage to 3-0.
While UMary senior midfielders
Kylee Welch,
Taylor Pettigrew and
Kaelie Schumacher didn't get in the scoring column, they helped shut down the Mustangs attack and kept the SMSU offense at bay. UMary's seventh senior,
Tiffany Ohlhauser, is out for the season with an injury but was introduced in the starting lineup and was sent on the pitch to do a ceremonial kickoff with her teammates.
The Marauders held a 14-9 edge in shots attempted while the Mustangs placed all nine of their shots on frame to eight for UMary. The difference was all the Marauders shots came inside the penalty area or closer while all the Mustangs shots came at a distance. SMSU had a 5-4 edge in corner kicks while UMary committed two more infractions, 10-8.
Waltman made nine saves to pick up her seventh shutout in ten games and the 15
th for her career.
The Marauders (6-2-2 overall / 4-2-2 in the NSIC) next host the University of Sioux Falls on Sunday, Oct, 20, at 1 pm, to wrap up Parents Weekend.
