EAST GRAND FORKS, MN – A trio of two-goal scorers led a record-setting performance for the University of Mary in a 7-0 victory over the University of Minnesota Crookston. Slated for last Friday but postponed until today due to a snowstorm, UMary set a team mark for goals scored in an NCAA game.
The seven goals scored for the Marauders exceeds the six UMary posted at Wayne State College on Sept. 28, 2008.
Freshmen Noelle Vignari and Maureen Sullivan and junior Emma Davies all scored two goals in the game for the Marauders. Additionally, all three also added one assist apiece.
This was the first time the Marauders had three players score at least two goals in the same NCAA game. Only one other time had the Marauders posted multiple players scoring multiple goals in an NCAA game; Amy Tanaka and Megan Wilson both tallied twice against MSU Moorhead on October 12, 2008.
Malia Brudvik posted two assists in the game, providing helpers on the second and third goals of the game.
In the one-sided contest, the Marauders stunned the Golden Eagles early, scoring twice in just 15 seconds. Patricia Martin opened the floodgates with a goal at the 15:31 mark of the opening half, scoring her first goal of the season off a feed from Sullivan.
Wasting no time doubling their lead, Vigneri found the net off a ball played by Brudvik at 15:46.
UMary picked up the pace of the offensive onslaught in the second half. Sullivan tallied her first collegiate goal in the 53
rd minute as Brudvik once again provided a hand.
Sullivan again found the net in the 70
th minute, this time with Vigneri earning an assist.
With Davies picking up the assist, Vigneri posted her second goal in the 73
rd minute.
Davies wrapped up the UMary outburst with two unassisted goals, the first at 80:49 with the second in the 85
th minute.
Madisyn Waltman posted her sixth clean sheet of the season and 14
th of her career. The sophomore goalkeeper is fourth all-time at UMary in career shutouts.
UMary (5-2-2 overall, 3-2-2 Northern Sun) dominated the stat sheet. The Marauders held a 32-10 edge in shots and a massive 26-1 advantage in shots on frame. The visitors also generated eight corner kicks to one for the Golden Eagles (0-8-0, 0-7-0).
The Marauders now return home to host Southwest Minnesota State University at 7 pm on Friday, Oct. 18 for senior and parents night before Sioux Falls visits on Sunday, Oct. 20. Both NSIC games are scheduled for the MDU Resources Community Bowl.
