Golden goal breaks Marauders hearts in loss at Bemidji State

BEMIDJI, MN – Back at the site where the University of Mary knocked NSIC champion and nationally-ranked Bemidji State University out of the 2018 Northern Sun soccer tournament last Halloween, the Marauders suffered a heartbreaking overtime loss. The Beavers scored a golden goal in the 106th minute to edge the Marauders 1-0.

UMary entered the game coming off a weekend where the Marauders defeated a Minnesota State University ranked fourth in the nation before earning a draw against a Concordia-St. Paul team then tied for the top spot in the NSIC. This week, after their game against the University of Minnesota Crookston was postponed on Friday due to inclement weather from a major fall storm, the Marauders took on the challenge of facing another team atop the NSIC standings board.

The Marauders withstood a strong opening half by the Beavers as BSU fired six shots – including two on frame – and four corner kicks at UMary. Led by sophomore goalkeeper Madisyn Waltman, ranked fourth in the nation in goals allowed per game at 0.29, the Marauders kept the Beavers out of the net.

Held without a shot in the first half and just one corner kick, the Marauders matched the Beavers in the second half. Both teams posted five shots, two shots on goal and BSU had the only corner kick.

Forced to overtime, the Marauders pushed hard to end the game in the first extra session. UMary fired three shots to one for Bemidji State. Maureen Sullivan placed one on frame with Patricia Martin and Noelle Vigneri just missing in the final two minutes.

UMary (4-2-2 overall / 2-2-2 NSIC) had the first opportunity to end the game in the second overtime session but Hannah Richter's shot missed left. BSU immediately countered with Alanna Mattson ending the game at 105:54 to give the Beavers (8-2-1 / 7-0-1) their seventh straight win.

Waltman finished her day with four saves. Martin, a senior, generated a team-best five shots with two on frame.

BSU held a 13-9 advantage in shots on frame and a 5-3 edge in shots on frame. The Beavers also generated seven corner kicks to 1 for the Marauders.

The Marauders, who have had two games postponed this season, return home to host Southwest Minnesota State University at 7 pm on Friday, Oct. 18 for senior and parents night before Sioux Falls visits on Sunday, Oct. 20.
