UMary Women's Basketball Closes Out Road Trip Against Sioux Falls And Southwest Minnesota State

THIS WEEKEND
The University of Mary women's basketball team continues their road trip and heads to Southern Minnesota and South Dakota for a weekend of basketball against Southwest Minnesota State and Sioux Falls. The Marauders will take on USF on Friday, January 18 at 5:30 PM. They will follow that up with a game on Saturday, January 19 at 4 PM against SMSU.
 
LAST TIME OUT
The last time UMary took to the court they suffered two tough road losses to Minnesota Duluth and St. Cloud State. The Marauders fell to the Bulldogs by a score of 78-71. Bohl posted 26 points, Williams put up 22 points and Askvig added a double-double with 11 points and 10 boards. UMary then fell to SCSU by a score of 83-70. Bohl had a big game with 28 points and 11 boards while Askvig added 22 points and Williams added 10 points and eight assists.
 
THE RECORD
The Marauders are 9-4 overall and 7-3 in NSIC play.
 
OPPO RESEARCH – UNIVERSITY OF SIOUX FALLS
Sioux Falls comes into the game against UMary with an 11-5 record. The Cougars will be a tough road test for the Marauders as they boast a 6-1 record on the home court. Kaely Hummel leads to Cougars averaging 15 points per game. The stout defense of USF only gives up 59 PPG.
 
HISTORY LESSON
Mary leads the NCAA Division II series with the Cougars 4-2… Marauders are 2-1 at home and 2-1 at USF… After UMary won the first three meetings, USF has captured the last two of the last three… Of the six contests, only one has been decided by more than five points
 
LAST MEETING
The last time the Marauders and Cougars met was during the 2017 season. UMary took down USF by a score of 76-71. Bohl, Askvig, Rotunda, and Williams all put up double-digits on the game. Gabbie Bohl led the teams with 18 points and 10 boards. Askvig matched Bohl's team high with 18 points.
 
 
OPPO RESEARCH – SOUTHWEST MINNESOTA STATE
Southwest Minnesota State comes into the game against UMary with a 7-8 record. The team has a 5-3 record on their home court. Three Mustangs average in the double figures. Caleigh Rodning averages 14.3 PPG. Meleah Reinhart averages 11.2 PPG while Sadie Stelter puts up 10.7. The Mustangs are second in the NSIC in free throw percentage (76.4)
 
HISTORY LESSON
UMary has won six of the last seven meetings with SMSU dating back to the 2011-12 season… Three of the last four games have gone to overtime, including a double-overtime game in UMary's visit to SMSU in 2016… UMary leads the all-time series 11-4.

The last time the Marauders and Mustangs met was during the 2017-18 season when SMSU took down UMary by a score of 73-58. Macy Williams posted a team high with 21 points. Gabbie Bohl added a double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds. Askvig pitched in 12 points.

The Marauders have a plus 8.2 scoring margin over the opponents which ranks sixth in the Northern Sun. Gabbie Bohl is first in the conference in scoring, averaging 20.1 PPG. Right behind her in fourth in the NSIC is Cassie Askvig who averages 17.5 PPG. The Marauders rank first in the conference in field goal percentage (45.8). Two Marauders rank in the top ten in individual field goal percentage. Bohl ranks fourth with a field goal percentage of 52.0 percent. Askvig sits right behind her in sixth with a field goal percentage of 50.0 percent. The Marauders ranks 21st in the nation if field goal percentage offense! Bohl ranks 22nd in the nation individually in scoring.
 
A HELPING PASS
The Marauders sure know how to share the ball. The team ranks third in the conference in assists, averaging 16.15 assists per game. Macy Williams ranks eighth in the conference averaging 3.1 assists per game. She ranks seventh in the conference in assists/turnover ratio. Tonya Dvorak comes in at 14th in the conference averaging 2.8 assists per game.
 
DEEEE-FENSE
The Marauders allow just 66.1 points/game, ninth in the NSIC. Teams are making just 37.1 percent of their shots against UMary, ranking them fourth in the conference in field goal percentage defense.
 
REJECTION
The Marauders are seventh in the NSIC in blocked shots at 3.54/game. Gabbie Bohl ranks tied for tenth in the NSIC averaging 1.2 blocks per game. Tonya Dvorak ranks tied for 13th and Cassie Askvig ranks 20th in the conference.
 
DOWNTOWN
Averaging 7.8 treys/game, the Marauders rank fourth in the NSIC. Shooting 37.1 percent from behind the arc, UMary is first in the conference in three point shooting percentage. Coral Gillette is tied for first in the conference averaging 2.4 three pointers per game. Cassie Askvig ranks third in the nation shooting 50 percent from behind the arc.
 
CHARITY STRIPE
Shooting 72.9 percent from the free throw line as a team this season the Marauders rank fifth in the NSIC. Cassie Askvig ranks sixth in the conference shooting 82.0 percent from the line. Gabbie Bohl is shooting 69.4 percent from the line to rank her 15th in the conference.
 
CRASHING THE GLASS
The Marauders rank second in the NSIC in defensive rebounds averaging 29.2 RPG. The Marauders rank fourth in rebounding margin with a plus 3.8 RPG average. Two Marauders rank in the top ten in the conference in rebounds per game. Askvig ranks fourth, averaging 9.5 RPG. Right behind her in seventh in Bohl who averaged 9.2 RPG.
 
 
YOUNG BUT EXPERIENCED
The UMary women's basketball team features no seniors. What the Marauders lack in seniors they make up for in experience. Several of the current players have been making a big impact for the Marauders since they were freshman, including Gabbie Bohl who was named NSIC freshman of the year her freshman year, first team All-NSIC her sophomore year, and is the NSIC north preseason player of the year this season. 
 
LIVING UP TO EXPECTATIONS
Big expectations surround Gabbie Bohl coming into this season. The junior was named the NSIC North Preseason Player of the Year and has shown exactly why she received that honor so far this season. Bohl is averaging 20.1 PPG, 9.2 RPG, and 1.2 BPG. She was named the NSIC player of the week for her performance the weekend of December 7-8. She was named to the WWU Lynda Goodrich Classic All-Tournament Team for her performance in the teams two games in Washington. Bohl recorded her 1,000 career point in her first game of her senior year when she got a bucket and drew the foul. She would convert on the three point play to give herself 1,000 career points.
 
CLIMBING THE ALL TIME RANKINGS
Gabbie Bohl became the 18th Marauders to score her 1,000 career point. She reached the milestone just one game into her junior year. She has since moved into 11th on the all time rankings with a total of 1,239 career points. She recently passed Jessie Slinde (1999-2003) who scored 1,200 points during her career. Bohl will be tracking down former teammate Hannah Larson (2013-2017) next, Larson has 1,276 career points. The junior forward has moved into 14th all time in career rebounds with 507. Cassie Askvig joins Bohl in the top 20 all time in career rebounds ranking 15th with 506. Askvig also moves into 27th all time in points scored with 874.
 
NEARING MILESTONES
Head Coach Rick Neumann is nearing the 100 win milestone. He is currently sitting at 98 wins. The UMary women's basketball program is nearing 700 wins. The Marauders need just 10 more wins to reach this mark. 
 
SOUND ALL-AROUND
Cassie Askvig has been incredibly well rounded and consistent in nearly every aspect of the game for UMary. The junior is averaging 17.5 PPG, 9.5 RPG and 2.3 APG. Askvig is shooting 50 percent from behind the arc and 50 percent from the field.
 
NSIC PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Gabbie Bohl and Cassie Askvig both have won NSIC Player of the Week this season. Bohl won the award for her 28.5 PPG and 13.5 RPG performance over a two game stretch. Askvig was given the award for her 18.5 PPG and 15.5 RPG performance over the past weekend.
