MANDAN, ND – A pair of
Alex Flicek goals bookended the day's scoring in the seventh straight win for the University of Mary hockey team. The host of the EverSpring Inn and Suites Icebreaker, the Marauders knocked off the visiting Boise State University ACHA squad 5-3. It was the third win in three days for the Marauders in the Icebreaker.
The Marauders leading goal scorer on the season, Flicek opened the scoring with a short-handed goal at 5:09 of the opening period. The lead was short-lived as the Broncos knotted the game at 6:26 with a power play goal.
Continuing to take advantage of Marauders penalties, Boise State converted on another power play opportunity at 12:38 to claim a 2-1 lead. For the first time their inaugural season the Marauders trailed in a game.
A new situation proved no kind of deterrent for the Marauders as Jakob Parisian pulled the Marauders even at 2-2 on a UMary power play at 15:09 with assists from
Josh Colleaux and
Andrew Heckaman.
Scoring the only goal of the second period,
Zachery Garrett took a feed from Benjamin Kottmeier at 3:10 to provide the Marauders a 3-2 lead.
Continuing to battle in their first game of the year, the Broncos created the third tie of the game on a Jake Minton unassisted goal only 47 seconds into the final period.
Once again the Marauders had a response as Colleaux scored at 3:00 to regain the lead for the Marauders at 4-3 with Parisien providing the assist.
Awarded a penalty shot at the 6:59 mark, Flicek clinched the contest for UMary with a shot through the 5-hole, providing an insurmountable two goal lead.
Lance Knudson earned the win for the Marauders, stopping 25 Boise State shots. Corey Grummick posted 30 saves for BSU.
BSU finished 2-for-6 on the power play, taking advantage of eight UMary infractions for 24 minutes. The Marauders were 1-for-3 on the power play as the Broncos were cited four times for eight minutes.
In Icebreaker games earlier in the day, Northern Colorado defeated Northern Arizona 5-0 while Denver skated past Williston State 11-6.
The Marauders next host Northern Colorado on Sunday, Sept. 30, at 6 pm in the Schwan Cadillac Arena at Starion Sports Complex on day four of the Icebreaker. Northern Arizona starts the day at noon against Denver before Williston State faces Boise State at 3 pm.
