Marauders stung by Mavericks in overtime

MANKATO, MN – In the span of less than 10 minutes, the University of Mary women's soccer team went from exhilaration to heartbroken. After forcing overtime with less than four minutes to play in regulation on the road against defending Northern Sun champion Minnesota State University, Mankato, the visiting Marauders suffered a tough 2-1 loss in overtime.

The Marauders (3-4-1 overall, 2-3-1 NSIC) held a couple early scoring chances but had a pair of shots blocked by defenders in the opening five minutes and found limited scoring opportunities as the game progressed

Behind freshman goalkeeper Madisyn Waltman and the UMary defenders, the Marauders held the Mavericks at bay until deep in the game. Minnesota State, receiving votes in the national poll, held a distinct advantage in shots but struggled to solve the UMary defense.

The Mavericks broke through in the 60th minute on a goal by Dakota Wendall.

UMary's offensive luck changed late in the match. Awarded a free kick in the 87th minute, Lisa Swärdh struck a ball from deep that evaded the Mavericks goaltender and defenders just inside the right post to knot the game at 1-1 and force overtime. It was the second goal of the season for Swärdh and the Marauders first and only shot on goal in the game.

Both teams had scoring opportunities early in overtime but it was the Mavericks who found the goal when Morgan Cottew scored in the 96th minute.

Waltman posted 12 saves in the game for UMary, a career-high.

Minnesota State (6-1-1 / 4-0-1) held leads in shots (23-5), shots on goal (14-1) and corner kicks (4-1).

The Marauders finish their two-game weekend road trip at Concordia-St. Paul on Sunday, Sept. 30, at 1 pm.
