BISMARCK, ND – Goals by all-conference performers
Caylin Cathey and
Megan Lowery off a pair of
Hannah Richter assists combined with another outstanding defensive effort led the University of Mary women's soccer team to a 2-0 win over visiting Wayne State College.
Playing at home for just the second time this season, both the Marauders and Wildcats found limited scoring chances throughout much of the opening half before UMary broke onto the scoreboard in the 40
th minute of play.
A forward pass by
Kylee Welch found Richter along the end line to the right of the net. In too shallow for a shot, the sophomore defender fired the ball in front of the net. Wayne State goalkeeper Alyssa Bagley deflected the ball away from the goal but to the center of the field where Cathey was able to corral the ball just outside the 6 yard box. All alone, the senior forward rifled the ball towards the left side of the net for her second game-winning goal of the year. It was the sixth goal of the season for Cathey, equaling her career-high.
UMary doubled their lead just two minutes into the second half. Richter centered a ball from the right side to Lowery, who one-timed a shot into the goal from 13 yards out for her first counter of the year. The senior forward tied for the team lead in goals last year with seven.
The Marauders defense continued to make life difficult for the Wildcats. While WSC had a couple opportunities late, the UMary defense held true, including a stop on the goal line by defender
Tiffany Ohlhauser in the final minutes.
Freshman goalkeeper
Madisyn Waltman posted five saves to earn her second career clean sheet. Bagley had two saves for WSC.
The Wildcats held slight statistical edges in shots (9-6), shots on goal (5-4) and corner kicks (5-2)
The Marauders (3-3-1 overall, 2-2-1 NSIC) returns to the road with a visit to nationally-ranked Minnesota State University on Friday, Sept. 28, and Concordia-St. Paul on Sept. 30.
