Cathey counter earns Marauders a 1-1 draw against Wolves

ABERDEEN, SD – A scorching hot Caylin Cathey continued to punish the net for the University of Mary as the Marauders played Northern State University to a 1-1 draw on the road in Northern Sun action.

After scoring two goals on Tuesday at Minot State University, the senior forward owned three goals in three games this season. Cathey increased her output to four counters in four games after scoring UMary's lone goal to help the Marauders gain a team point in the conference standings.

Homestanding Northern State grabbed an early lead in the seventh minute when Stephany Estrada scored an unassisted goal from the middle top of the box.

An offensive flurry for the Marauders led to the equalizer a short time later. After a corner kick, Jade Smith and Cathey followed with shots on frame. After an initial save on Cathey's attempt, the All-Northern Sun performer beat everyone to the ball on the left side of the box to tap home what proved to be the final goal of the night.

Defense took center stage the remainder of the game. Both teams attempted a combined three shots the remainder of the first half with the Wolves owning the only shot on frame.

The Marauders took a flurry of shots 15 minutes into the second half. Shots by Both Jade Smith and Lisa Swardh were turned away by Wolves keeper Jessica Otto and another Smith attempt was blocked.

Held without a shot on frame in the second half until the 88th minute, the Wolves were turned away by Marauders freshman keeper Madisyn Waltman to force overtime.

UMary controlled the first overtime, producing three shots – one on frame – and generating two corner kicks while NSU had neither.

The second overtime was more of the same. The Marauders forced Otto into making three saves while both Wolves shots went wide.

Overall the Marauders held a 20-10 edge in shots, including an 11-4 advantage on frame. In overtime the Marauders took eight of the ten shots and had the only four attempts on goal during extra time.
