MOORHEAD, MN – Continuing her offensive onslaught through the early Northern Sun schedule, University of Mary women's soccer senior
Caylin Cathey scored a goal for the third straight game. The Marauders defense made sure Cathey's counter held up, winning 1-0 on the road at MSU Moorhead.
Cathey has scored four goals in three NSIC games this week. For the season she has five goals in five games and just needs one more counter to equal her career best that was established last season.
In a scoreless first half, both teams had scoring opportunities but both goalkeepers kept the scoreboard clean. Making her fourth straight start, freshman
Madisyn Waltman made four saves for the Marauders before intermission while MSUM's Kayleigh Sedlacek posted two stops.
The scoreless deadlock was snapped in the 68
th minute when all-conference performers Cathey and
Megan Lowery combined for the goal. It was the first assist of the season for Lowery, who took a game-high five shots.
With a goal in hand, the Marauders let their defense take center stage. The Dragons managed just one shot in the final 20 minutes of play, that following a corner kick.
Waltman posted her first collegiate clean sheet, finishing with seven saves. Sedlacek had eight for the Dragons.
UMary held a massive 19-10 edge in shots and a 9-7 margin in shots on goal. The Marauders also led in corner kicks (8-4) while the Dragons posted more penalties (15-to-9).
After playing five straight games on the road to open the season, the Marauders (2-2-1 overall / 1-1-1 NSIC) home schedule opens Friday, Sept. 21, with a visit from Augustana. Game time is 3 pm at the MDU Resources Community Bowl.
