BISMARCK, ND – The University of Mary trio of
Natalia Cruz,
Sydney Murphy and
Madison Bergthold were a dominant force tonight against the Beavers of Minot State University. Cruz had a game-high 12 kills, Murphy led all players with 33 assists and Bergthold had a posted six blocks. Though the Marauders had a player with game highs in nearly every category, UMary could not fend off a Beavers who won in three sets (25-21, 25-22, 25-23).
With the loss, the Marauders fall to 3-8 on the season and 0-3 in conference play.
The Marauders came into this came with a fire lit under their bellies for this in-state rivalry match-up. Both teams came out very strong in this tightly contested game with every set coming down to the wire.
In the first set of the match the Beavers took the lead early and held onto it the entire match. The Marauders had a no-quit attitude, battling back anytime the Beavers tried to pull away, finishing the match with a score of 25-21 in favor of the Beavers.
Set two was all Marauders in the beginning. Behind the serving of
Anna Nietfeld UMary jumped out to a 7-0 lead. The Marauders held the sizeable lead for a bit but the Beavers kept gnawing into the disparity and eventually jumped in front at 16-15. The Beavers didn't look back from there, pulling away to win 25-22.
The last of the three sets was the closest of them all. The back and forth battle found the Marauders trailing 18-11 at one point but the Marauders showed no quit on their home court, battling back to tie the game at 23-23. The Beavers then tallied the last two points of the match to win 25-23.
Katja Berge has become another familiar name on the score sheet posting impressive game after impressive game. Berge continued this trend tonight against the Beavers posting the second highest amount of kills on the team with 9. She posted an astounding kill percentage of .250 which lead the team.
The Marauders have two more matches at home this week. They will play the St. Cloud State Huskies on Friday, September 14, at 6 pm, followed up with a match against the 6
th ranked Minnesota Duluth Bulldogs on Saturday, September 15, at 2 pm.
