The University of Mary women's soccer team opens their 2018 Northern Sun schedule on the road with three games in six days. The Marauders kick off conference play at Minot State University on Tuesday, Sept 11, at 7 pm. The week continues with a visit to Northern State University at 3 pm on Friday, Sept. 14, before completing the 3-game stretch at MSU Moorhead on Sunday, Sept. 16, at 1 pm.
Â
REWIND
The Marauders started the 2018 season with a pair of contests at the Rimrock Classic, hosted by MSU Billings. UMary opened with a 5-3 victory over Black Hills State University that featured a pair of goals and an assist by
Hannah Richter and counters by Lisa Swardh,
Caylin Cathey and
Jade Smith… The weekend finished with a 1-0 loss to the University of Nebraska Omaha. The lone counter came on a penalty kick in just the third minute of play.
Â
DOOLEY, WELCH NAMED TO RIMROCK CLASSIC ALL-TOURNAMENT TEAM
Caitlin Dooley and
Kylee Welch were named to the 2018 Rimrock Classic All-Tournament team. This is the second straight year Dooley, a senior midfielder, has earned a spot on the squad. The pair led a Marauders defense that held opposing offenses in check, limiting UMary's two opponents to just 16 total shots with only eight on goal. Of the four goals allowed, one came on a penalty shot. Dooley was second on the team in minutes with 161 and wasn't on the pitch for any opponent goals during the run of play. Welch played 146 minutes. Both were credited with one shot.
Â
A LOOK BACK
UMary finished the 2017 season with a record of 12-5-1 overall, an increase of eight wins from the previous year. UMary was fifth in the NSIC standings and defeated Minot State 1-0 on the road in the first round of the Northern Sun tournament to advance to the semifinals.
Â
IMPACT
Hannah Richter was on fire in the opener. The sophomore defender assisted on the third goal of the day before scoring a pair of second half goals. As a freshman the defender didn't have a goal or an assist for the Marauders but played a key role in keeping opponents off the scoreboard as UMary had one of the top defensive units in the league.
Â
TRIAL BY FIRE
Freshman goalkeeper
Madisyn Waltman made her first career appearance against Nebraska Kearney. Just 2:25 into the game the Lopers were awarded a penalty kick and converted for the only goal of the game. Waltman then proceeded to make three saves and keep UNK from scoring during the run of play.
Â
NEWCOMERS
In addition to
Madisyn Waltman, two other Marauders gained their first starts for UMary. Snædís Daníelsdóttir started the first game in goal for UMary and claimed the win in the victory over Black Hills State.
Malia Brudvik, a defender who transferred from Peninsula College, started both games.
Â
MORE NEW FACES
Sidney Burrell,
Reegin Kehn and
Rebekah Bittner also made their Marauders debuts during the Rimrock Classic. Burrell, a junior midfielder, played in both games. Kehn and Bittner saw action in the opener.
Â
REINFORCEMENTS
Three Marauders limited by injury last year returned to the pitch. A sophomore,
Patricia Martin was limited to just one game last season returned to see significant time in each of the first two games.
Katie Berg and
Kacee Bailey, seniors defenders who missed all of last year, both returned to play a game each on the weekend.
Â
SENIOR SALUTE
The Marauders feature five seniors in the starting lineup. Midfielders
Caitlin Dooley and
Megan Lowery both earned all-conference and all-region honors last season. Forwards
Jade Smith and
Caylin Cathey received All-Northern Sun honors. The fifth senior is Lisa Swärdh, who already has a goal and an assist on the season.
Â
HOMECOMING
The Marauders make their first appearance at home on Friday, Sept. 21, when Augustana comes to visit.
